Democrats And Republicans Agree: Michelle Obama Absolutely Nailed It

When the Democratic National Convention opened on Monday to a chorus of boos from Bernie Sanders supporters, much of the attention focused on what the runner-up for the nomination would say to calm his faithful following.

But someone else stole the show.

First Lady Michelle Obama won praise for giving a stirring and optimistic speech in which she managed to attack Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump without once mentioning his name.

Praise for the speech came from across the political spectrum:

John Podhoretz, editor of Commentary and speechwriter for presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, sent out a series of tweets praising both the first lady and the writer of her speech:

A former president seemed to enjoy her speech:

But nothing will top the very personal reaction from a certain other president:

President Obama is scheduled to deliver his own speech in support of Hillary Clinton on Wednesday night.

The Big Idea Behind Integrative Medicine

2016-07-25-1469470698-7845448-Hippocrates.jpg

Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.

Hippocrates

Integrative medicine is an ecosystem of support for pursuing your own health and well-being. Inside that ecosystem is someone who cares about you.
Integrative medicine is emerging from a successful history of treating physical ailments that often eluded Western modalities of care to become an ecosystem of support for health and wellness. Possibly the most visible sign of this development is the increasing attention of integrative medicine to primary care, where prevention and regard for the whole person is most critical.

What distinguishes integrative medicine as an approach is that it distances itself from the traditional model of a patient dependent on an expert. Rather, it embraces a genuine clinical partnership in which both the patient and the care provider have something to offer in pursuit of the patient’s optimal health. The care provider embodies not only clinical knowledge, which is the result of his or her training, but also qualities not always associated with experts. These include curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor, and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Patients are participants as well, offering knowledge of what has worked for them in the past, providing information that can’t be quantified on a medical report, and finding meaning and purpose in their response to the challenges faced when confronted by illness.

The power of integrative medicine comes from acknowledging the multiple dimensions that can cause illness and an equal respect for the various modalities that can address healing and cure. Freed from a traditional repertoire of either pharmacological or surgical solutions (pills or knife), integrative medicine practitioners have expanded the treatment landscape to include nutrition, bodywork, chiropractic, mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative psychotherapy, and ancient healing practices such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. From exploring the optimal chemistry for our digestive tract to treating autoimmune conditions to finding novel ways to address trauma, integrative medicine is showing us a whole new way to educate ourselves about health and take responsibility for our own well-being.

The emerging field of integrative care is as much an idea as a set of practices. The idea is of an ecosystem of support, an intersecting set of relationships that address the whole human package — body, mind, heart, and soul. And at the center of this ecosystem of support are people who care about you. The ability to be seen by a team of providers and staff who value you as a whole person is a central premise permeating all other techniques and practices.

I am reminded of the support that the poet W.H. Auden gave Dr. Oliver Sacks when he was composing Awakenings, a book about his work with a group of patients who had been in a decades-long sleep and were now coming back to consciousness. Auden wrote: “You’re going to have to go beyond the clinical. … Be metaphorical, be mystical, be whatever you need.” I find here the implication that it is our deep regard for the human condition that moves us beyond the complacent and routine. It is in our profound respect for service to others that we touch mystery and wholeness. At the heart of integrative medicine is a bold invitation to go beyond the clinical, into regions that capture our hearts and imagination. Caring is fundamental. Nothing else really matters without love as an organizing principle. Or as one patient I know told her physician, “I just want someone who gives a damn.”

Caring relationships can and should be with our care providers, but they must also be evident in our social networks, our family, and our community, and in our relationship with nature. Beyond the particular type of care we receive is a broader view of health that includes the social and relational. Caring is about how we manifest love in the form of looking out for each other, witnessing, supporting, provoking, and optimizing our capacity to face health and illness, life and death, with dignity. Wise old Hippocrates had it right: Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

I had the opportunity to talk about all this with Dr. Jeff Draisin, co-medical director of the Institute for Health and Healing. IHH operates a network of clinics in Northern California and has pioneered integrative medicine practice there for nearly 25 years. Here are seven distinctions he articulated about the emerging field of integrative care. I think he captures something here of essence, particular themes that direct our attention to what matters most and the attributes that together make a whole.

Integrative care does the following:

  • It shifts our understanding of care from a focus on illness and shortcomings to a focus on well-being, personal growth, and transformation.
  • It cares for the whole person by addressing mind, body, and spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health and well-being.
  • It helps individuals craft healthy relationships with their physical bodies, mental outlook, and emotional well-being. Beyond fitness and exercise is the relationship we have with our whole self.
  • It treats nutrition — what we put in our body — as medicine. Beyond diets and supplements is an understanding of what helps our body to feel vital and how best to decrease the effects of toxins.
  • It embraces the latest discoveries of neuroscience and mind-related health for personal well-being — from mindfulness stress reduction to the benefits of awe and wonder.
  • It creates a true partnership that joins the best of Western medicine with ancient healing traditions and complementary modalities. The guiding intent is to restore harmony and address imbalances that detract from optimal health.
  • It values psychological and spiritual forces as food for the soul. Feeling valued, having purpose, and finding meaning are all essential elements of healing and health.

If we pursue health practices and policies along these lines, we will transform health care and bring the art of caring into the heart of medicine.

California City Bans Deceptive Ads By Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Clinics

OAKLAND, Calif. ― The city council here has tightened regulations around pregnancy clinics that try to fool prospective patients with advertisements falsely suggesting that they perform abortions.

The ordinance, passed last week, makes Oakland the second U.S. city to target advertising by so-called crisis pregnancy centers that mask an anti-abortion agenda, according to organizations promoting abortion rights. San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in 2011.

Some such clinics have used billboards and online ads to trick women into thinking that they perform abortions or offer other emergency contraceptive care, according to Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. She said she’s troubled that searching Google for information about abortions in Oakland brings up results for nearby centers that don’t provide the service.

“When women are seeking reproductive health care, it is time-sensitive and urgent,” said Everitt. “When you put an entity or organization in the way that’s specifically targeting them to deceive them into wasting their time and delay them from accessing other care, what that creates for the women and families of California is a public harm.”

Anti-abortion centers, also known as limited-service pregnancy centers, outnumber Planned Parenthood’s 115 clinics in California, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman said. An exact count is difficult because many centers are not registered with authorities, and they often change names. A list compiled by California ProLife Council includes 190 crisis pregnancy centers.

The problem extends to websites that include inaccurate medical information about pregnancies, or that overstate the dangers of abortions and the morning-after pill. Oakland officials representing city council and the city attorney highlighted passages on OptionOnline.org, which refers women to crisis pregnancy centers in the Bay Area, as the kind of misleading medical advice that might run afoul of the law.

“Many pregnancies result in miscarriage so an abortion might not be necessary,” the website says. Another passage warns that the Plan B and emergency contraception pills “can actually hurt you if you take them while you are pregnant.”

Violators can be fined and sued by Oakland’s city attorney if they refuse to take down contested ads.

Support Circle, a licensed medical clinic with three sites in the Bay Area, including one in Oakland, is one facility that has relied on deceptive advertising to shade its anti-abortion stance, according to Oakland officials.

“Support Circle is a safe place where you can sort out your thoughts and feelings in a non-pressured environment, and make healthy, well-informed choices in line with your core values,” the clinic website says. The organization counsels against abortion.

“Clients can meet with medical professionals and receive information about early pregnancy symptoms, the morning after pill, abortion, the abortion pill, emergency contraception, Plan B, Ella, pregnancy and drugs, pregnancy and smoking, pregnancy and alcohol, and miscarriage,” the Support Circle website continues.

Support Circle did not respond to The Huffington Post’s inquiries.

A conservative legal organization that has represented crisis pregnancy centers said Oakland’s new law is flawed. The ordinance assumes women don’t research the services offered at crisis pregnancy centers before going to one, said Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute president.

“My fear is that abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood will succeed in achieving their end goal that women in crises will not receive compassionate counseling to alternatives and that more women will abort their unborn babies,” Dacus said. He said the law was motivated by Planned Parenthood’s desire for more customers.

County health officials encouraged Oakland to pass the law, saying crisis pregnancy centers interfere with prenatal care in other ways. Some of the clinics target residents of low-income neighborhoods and force women to transfer to doctors and clinics 20 weeks to 24 weeks into their pregnancies, when it’s too late to obtain an abortion, according to a June letter from Alameda County Public Health Department officials. Doctors and clinics that pick up these patients have complained that the crisis pregnancy centers delay sharing critical lab results and other medical records, according to the letter.

“We do not have the resources to compete with the misleading advertising of the crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter says.

San Francisco’s law was challenged by an anti-abortion center that contended it violated free speech rights. A federal judge upheld the ordinance in 2015, saying commercial speech can be regulated.

“Oakland respects the activists’ right to express their views and counsel against abortion. If their message is truly compelling, they should have no problem being honest about what they do and do not offer,” City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement. “If they refuse to be honest, the City Attorney will have the power to sue violators to hold them accountable.”

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.

It’s Time to Stand Up for Truth and Intelligence

In a time when the American news media focused on reporting facts, rather than entertaining the public, iconic broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite made a comment about American values and education that seems even more powerful today. Averred Cronkite, “”[w]hatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

Indeed, as “the most trusted man in America” well understood, nothing is more costly to a democratic society than ignorance. We are seeing this on a daily basis today in the U.S. Much of the violence Americans are seeing is a product of ignorance, as is much of the rhetoric accepted by supporters of the GOP.

Donald Trump’s apparent ignorance about topics ranging from economics to international affairs has been well documented, but far more troubling is the ignorance of his followers, who do not appear to have the critical thinking skills or perhaps simply the reliable information necessary to see ignorance, lies, and twisted truths when they encounter them.

The fear mongering that Trump has succeeded in using to gain supporters can be successful only in a society governed not by information and intelligence, but by fear and ignorance. Unfortunately, the GOP’s leadership champions ignorance and distortion of fact.

When candidates make ridiculous claims such as Ben Carson’s publicly expressed view that the Pyramids of Giza were not tombs, but grain silos built by the Biblical son of Jacob to get ready for the famine in Genesis or when Donald Trump comments about Ted Cruz’s father on the basis of a report from the National Enquirer, it’s a symptom of deeper problems. Such comments would not be taken seriously by a public that was well informed and would be immediately refuted by party leadership, unless of course that leadership is itself stunningly ignorant or cynically willing to turn a deaf ear on the dangers of ignorance and lies in order to gain power.

Nor would these types of comments gain any traction if the news media uniformly called them out on the grounds that they lack verity. As it stands, only parts of the news media see their job as upholding truth.

The Washington Post clearly is one media outlet that recognizes its responsibility in the American democratic system. It just published a full-page editorial on the dangers of a Trump presidency. The newspaper notes that Mr. Trump’s ignorance, arrogance, and aggressiveness combined with his “politics of denigration and division” present a clear threat to the American democratic system.

This is correct, but the threat is really much more pernicious. The true danger to American democracy lies in a significant portion of the voting public that lacks the ability or information necessary to recognize what a threat Mr. Trump actually represents. Rather than drawing support, his wanton disregard for facts and open ignorance of the Constitution as noted by the Post should send a shiver through anyone invested in democracy.

Americans are faced with a very serious choice this November. In the past, whether Republican or Democrat, it has seemed clear that presidential candidates have shared a commitment to protecting the Constitution and democratic values, even if their specific ideas about how best to protect those things vary. It is not at all clear that Mr. Trump shares that commitment.

It’s a sad reality that the U.S. has arrived at this point, but we are here and it is time for those who support truth, facts, and intelligence–whether they are conservatives or liberals–to work hard to protect American democracy. The November election is nothing less than a vote on the future of that democratic system.

If we fail, and elect Mr. Trump, we face a very real possibility of paying that hefty price Walter Cronkite warned us to avoid. Whether it is through libraries, schools, or the media, there is nothing more important than ensuring that our society is well informed and able to recognize genuine threats to democracy, particularly when they come in the guise of claims to make America great again.

As a journalist, Mr. Cronkite recognized his most important job was not to entertain but to educate the public. As members of the Fourth Estate, journalists today need to, perhaps more than ever, recognized that their job is to protect democracy by informing the public. The Washington Post took this responsibility very seriously; one would hope that other news outlets follow their lead.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

A Sorrowful Farewell To Baton Rouge Officer Matthew Gerald

BATON ROUGE, La. ― Matthew Gerald, a 41-year-old rookie police officer who was one of three lawmen shot to death last week by a gunman who targeted police, was remembered Friday at an emotional service attended by thousands of mourners and police officers from around the nation.

“For Matthew Gerald, being a cop wasn’t just what he did, it was who he was,” said Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr., whose voice broke several times as he eulogized the slain officer. “He served with honor [and] our hearts are broken.”

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Ken Spivey spoke about Gerald’s commitment to the military, the police department and his family.

“Following his graduation from Central High School, Matt initially pursued a career in the military,” Spivey said. “He achieved the rank of U.S. Army specialist, earning four air medals. In addition, he was a Black Hawk crew chief, a corporal in the United States Marines and also completed three tours of duties in Iraq. Matt relentlessly showed others good through his own actions … The love of his life, however, was his family. Matt was an amazing husband, son, father and a friend.”

Gerard’s funeral was held five days after a gunman opened fire in Baton Rouge, killing Gerard, Baton Rouge Officer Montrell Jackson, 32, and Brad Garafola, 45, of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. Three other officers were wounded.

The gunman, identified by police as Gavin Long, a former Marine from Missouri who authorities say targeted the officers, was fatally shot by a SWAT team.

“There is no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated,” Col. Michael Edmonson, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, said Monday. “It was a calculated act.”

Garafola will be buried on Saturday. Jackson’s funeral is set for Monday.

In the days before the Louisiana shootings, demonstrators had been demanding justice for victims of police brutality, particularly Alton Sterling, who was killed here on July 5.

Two days later, a sniper killed five law enforcement officers at a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, citing revenge for recent police shootings as a motive.

The day after police killed Sterling, a 37-year-old father of five, an officer shot and killed Philando Castile, 32, during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. The shootings of both black men were caught on videos that were widely shared, and sparked renewed calls for reforming police use of force and the criminal justice system.

During Gerard’s funeral, Chief Dabadie expressed frustration at media reports critical of his agency’s handling of protestors.

“The media has blasted us for what we do and how we do it,” Dabadie said. “Basically, portraying law enforcement as these bunch of bullies who go around and beat people up … We’re not bullies. We’re protecting our communities and they’re throwing us under the bus for it and that’s wrong.”

Also speaking at Friday’s service was Kip Holden, mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, who asked everyone to set aside their differences and join together.

“A community in mourning should evaluate itself and say, ‘What else can I do to make my community better,’” Holden said. “The men and women who dawn that uniform are here for all of us.”

Gerald’s wife, Dechia, who attended the funeral with daughters Dawclyn and Fynleigh, did not speak at the funeral. However, she did write a letter, which was distributed to mourners. In it, she said her husband was driven to become a police officer, something she supported and felt made their marriage stronger.

“Ultimately, the only thing stronger than his love for the red, white and blue was his love for us,” she wrote.

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

That Was A Very Scary Speech Donald Trump Just Gave

CLEVELAND ― Be afraid. Be very afraid.

That was the essential message of the Republican National Convention this week and it was the same essential message that Donald Trump conveyed to the American people on Thursday evening, when he formally accepted his party’s nomination for president.

Maybe it isn’t surprising. From the day Trump announced his candidacy, warning about mythical rapists that Mexico was sending across the border, the real estate mogul has been telling people that they and their livelihoods were under siege ― from undocumented immigrants, global corporations, Muslim terrorists, elitist liberals, and criminals shooting cops.

He hit all of those themes in his speech Thursday and he hit them hard ― so hard, in fact, that he barely had time for anything else. The speech was long, even by convention speech standards. According to C-Span, it was the longest since 1972, eclipsing even Bill Clinton’s marathon in 1996.

Despite all that time, Trump gave almost no attention to other issues.

School choice and Obamacare each got just one line, while abortion got none. He spent a few minutes on the economy, but nearly all of it was about trade ― and how he intended to protect American jobs by ripping up old trade agreements and imposing tariffs on countries that don’t compete fairly.

The economy section also included one comically vague line ― “I will outline reforms to add millions of new jobs and trillions in new wealth” ― followed by a warning that his efforts “will be opposed by some of our nation’s most powerful special interests. That is because these interests have rigged our political and economic system for their exclusive benefit.”

The section on immigration, naturally, dwelled on the stories of people murdered by undocumented immigrants ― and some highly questionable statistics on how immigration has affected the economy. Even in those few moments when Trump was trying to appeal to idealism, he did so by portraying stories of people or communities under assault.

Maybe nobody should be surprised. Trump delivered his speech from a teleprompter, sticking mostly to the prepared text that had leaked hours before. But it was not much different from the extemporaneous riffs he’s been delivering at campaign stops for months ― or from what previous convention speakers, particularly former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, had said on previous nights.

Still, many political professionals had long assumed, and many Republican strategists had desperately hoped, that Trump would use this convention speech to “pivot” to a more positive, more inclusive America. It wouldn’t have been that difficult, if Trump had been even slightly interested in doing so.

Four years ago, Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, gave such a speech when he accepted the Republican presidential nomination. He talked about his biography, his vision for a prosperous and peaceful America, and some of his ideas about how to get there. It was unabashedly nationalistic, but, unlike Trump’s speech, it was optimistic too ― like when Romney paid homage to Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, who had just died.

“I don’t doubt for a second that Neil Armstrong’s spirit is still with us,” Romney said, “that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.”

Conventional wisdom says that Trump’s speech won’t help him ― that optimism beats pessimism, that hope beats fear, that light beats dark. And that’s an opportunity for Hillary Clinton.

She may not have the rhetorical tools of either of the two most recent Democratic presidents. But in her best speeches from this campaign season ― the one on Roosevelt Island when she officially launched her campaign, and the one at the Brooklyn Navy Yard when she clinched the number of delegates she needs for the nomination ― Clinton was able to give uplifting messages.

Trump is also fighting demographics. His angry, dark campaign has gotten him this far because it appeals to a constituency within the Republican Party that is overwhelmingly white and, according to polling data, overwhelmingly convinced that it is losing control of the country to the non-white population.

But the non-white population is getting bigger and bigger, which means that Trump can’t win unless he somehow runs up unprecedented margins among whites (which he hasn’t done so far) or makes inroads with African-Americans and Latinos (which seems impossible, particularly after Thursday night).

Still, a Trump victory is far from unthinkable. After The New York Times polling model predicted that Hillary Clinton has a 76 percent chance of winning, writer Josh Katz noted that it meant Trump could still win ― and that his chances were about the equivalent of a pro basketball player missing a free throw.

Sometimes that happens.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Donald Trump Flunks Actual Sanity Test Given By Keith Olbermann

Time for some armchair psychiatry.

Sports and political commentator Keith Olbermann used the 20 items on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist ― an actual clinical tool used to help diagnose psychopathy ― to assess Donald Trump.

The results?

Well, let’s just say the GOP presidential candidate probably won’t be bragging about his YUGE numbers on this one.

Read Olbermann’s column in Vanity Fair, or watch his analysis of the test in the clip above, which was posted online by the magazine on Thursday.

This Cannot Be The Convention That Donald Trump Wanted

CLEVELAND ― There were no plagiarized lines Wednesday night at the Republican convention. No insinuations of satanism, or half-empty crowds during late-night speeches. Instead, there was thunderous booing of a prime-time speaker and lingering questions about whether the Trump campaign will ever be able to bring the GOP’s warring factions together.

The night was supposed to belong to vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, who delivered a paint-by-numbers conservative address befitting the role he’s being asked to play on the ticket. But it will be remembered for the booing endured ― or perhaps engineered ― by GOP nominee Donald Trump’s former top challenger, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who not only refused to endorse the Republican nominee during his speech, but also encouraged attendees to vote their conscience.

Cruz’s play will be the subject of endless debate in the weeks ahead. It certainly will feed speculation that he and others see Trump as a general election loser, whose defeat will deliver new opportunities to reshape and lead the Republican Party. What’s undoubtedly clear is that this wasn’t an act of defiance by some rogue agent. Yes, Trump has the vast majority of support from Republican voters, many of them converts.

“I love him,” said Dena DeCamp, a Florida delegate and president of the Florida Federation of Republican Women. “He was not my first choice. Rubio was my first choice. … But during the campaign, even before Rubio was out, my husband and I would be watching and listening to Donald Trump, and saying he was making so much sense.”

But in the halls of the convention, where the party elite chat in hushed tones, he’s no loved figure.

One delegate who supported the presidential candidacy of Ohio Gov. John Kasich ― whose absence from the convention was as astonishing as Cruz’s act of defiance ― was asked if Wednesday night was bittersweet. “No,” he replied. “Just bitter.”

A Cruz delegate said he felt “numb” watching the coronation of Trump. “I’m just stumbling through the motions.” Asked if booze was helping, he playfully replied: “maybe.”

An alternate delegate from Texas said he was “here for the balloons, not for the nominee.”

But even as opposition to Trump lingers in the corners of the GOP, the candidate himself has a few factors working in his favor. And they were plainly visible on Wednesday night. He is an expert showman, tactically upstaging Cruz by entering the hall and drawing the eyeballs of the room as Cruz’s speech ended. And, unlike during the early stages of the primary, Trump has a widening net of support.

“Look, people in this hall, a lot of them worked really hard for Ted,” Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) a prominent Trump endorser, told The Huffington Post. “They believe in Ted. They were passionate. And it’s harder for them. But out there, among the voters, I saw a poll, 87 percent had rallied behind Trump and I think that’s going to continue to grow.”

“There are a few holdouts,” Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) acknowledged. “But for every one of those, there are 10 people here who have never been to a convention before.”

With a difficult electoral map and putrid polling numbers, Trump must hope that he is drawing more people into the political process, as Inhofe suggested. But if the convention was viewed as a means for inspiring those usually sedentary voters, then Trump’s aides will have their disappointments.

There has been no thematic consistency to the proceedings. Each night has had distractions. Revelations that Trump’s wife Melania had cribbed some of her speech from first lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 address drowned out all other stories from the opening session. Tuesday brought the now infamous chants that Hillary Clinton should be jailed for her use of a private email server. And Wednesday came Cruz, who was booed again outside Quicken Loans Arena after his speech. Many screamed for the senator to “go to hell.”

Even the lower-profile speakers have lacked star power or, for that matter, crisp and unapologetic boosting of the man now at the top of the ticket.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, one of Wednesday’s first speakers, prefaced his support of Trump by admitting “he can be a little impolite and a little gruff and for some people he may be too direct.”

Trump may very well leave Cleveland with political momentum, though much will depend on his own speech Thursday ― one of the most-anticipated convention addresses in modern memory.

But he also will emerge with a faction of the party still smarting about the primary. Outside the arena, members of the Texas delegation gathered around high-top tables filled with drinks, furious with how Cruz had been treated and convinced that Trump’s campaign had whipped up the booing.

“Trump walking into the arena proved that he is a classless individual, okay?” said Jeremiah Hunter, a delegate from Longview, Texas. “Because he stole the thunder from Ted Cruz right when he was ending his speech. That’s classless. It was deliberate and anyone who thinks it’s not deliberate is delusional. And that’s what I have to say about that.”

Trump’s backers, too, have grown increasingly frustrated with those refusing to fall in line. Carl Paladino, the Buffalo, New York, real estate developer who is one of Trump’s top supporters, floated the idea that Cruz may have cost himself a chance at being appointed by a President Trump to the U.S. Supreme Court for his act of defiance, before downplaying Trump’s vindictiveness.

“I don’t think he will hold that against him,” Paladino told The Huffington Post. “He will still consider him to be a Supreme Court justice. Donald rolls with the punches.”

That seems diplomatic, compared with the response of a donor who reportedly had to be restrained from attacking Cruz in a suite after his speech.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee took to Facebook to rail against Cruz’s speech. And radio talk show host Laura Ingraham, in one of the night’s better-received speeches, painted holdouts in the audience as whiny, thoughtless, wimps.

“Even all you boys with wounded feelings and bruised egos … You must honor your pledge to support Donald Trump now,” she said. “Tonight. Tonight.”

Jonathan Cohn, Amanda Terkel and Jennifer Bendery contributed reporting.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

An Apology Expert Analyzes The Explanation For Melania Trump’s Plagiarism

Speechwriter Meredith McIver’s mea culpa for the plagiarism in Melania Trump’s Republican National Convention speech is a genuine statement of contrition that is likely to be accepted, says an expert on apologies.

It has almost all the essential elements an apology needs to increase its likelihood of being embraced, and appears to be written from the heart and not under instruction by the Trump campaign, according to Roy Lewicki, a professor emeritus of management and human resources at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business who specializes in trust development and trust repair.

However, when viewed in the light of the Trump campaign’s initial reaction to the news that Melania Trump had delivered lines that were previously spoken by Michelle Obama during the 2008 Democratic convention, Lewicki isn’t quite sure what to make of the wider significance of McIver’s statement. Its release is puzzling, to say the least, and presents a fuzzy message on just how trustworthy the Trump campaign is.

“It’s surprising that this is one of the few times in the campaign that someone has owned up to a mistake or an error, and I would be hard pressed to know exactly why, in her case, this was allowed to sort of come out,” Lewicki said. “Particularly since the campaign and the candidate, in the previous 36 hours, were doing anything they could do to dismiss it or deny it or claim it was a trivial issue.”

But first, let’s dig into the apology itself

According to Lewicki’s research on the six essential elements of a sincere and effective apology, McIver hits it out of the park. Those six elements, in order of importance, are:

  1. Acknowledgement of responsibility

  2. Offer of repair

  3. Expression of regret

  4. Explanation of what went wrong

  5. Declaration of repentance

  6. Request for forgiveness

The more of these elements an apology contains, the more likely a recipient is to accept it, according to Lewicki’s recent study published in April

Here is McIver’s statement in full, re-typed from the PDF released on the Trump campaign website Wednesday morning. We’ve annotated it to point out the statements that fulfill the apology elements on Lewicki’s list.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

My name is Meredith McIver and I’m an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization. I am also a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family.

In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady Speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check Mrs. Obama’s speeches [4: Explanation of what went wrong]. This was my mistake [1: Acknowledgment of responsibility], and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant [3: Expression of regret].

Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family [6: Request for forgiveness, or what Lewicki describes as a “backhanded request”], but they rejected it. Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences [5: Declaration of repentance].

I asked to put out this statement because I did not like seeing the way this was distracting from Mr. Trump’s historic campaign for president and Melania’s beautiful message and presentation.

I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused. Today, more than ever, I am honored to work for such a great family. I personally admire the way Mr. Trump has handled this situation and I am grateful for his understanding.

Sincerely,

[Signature]

Meredith McIver

It’s important to note that Element 4, the explanation of what went wrong, can further affect the way an apology lands because it could either be an honest mistake or a violation of integrity that reflects on a person’s character. In McIver’s case, she explains it was an honest mistake.

You’ll also see that Element 2 is missing ― that’s because there really is no way to repair the fact that Melania Trump delivered a partially plagiarized speech to an audience of 23 million TV viewers, Lewicki explained. But barring that, the statement is well-crafted and appears to convey genuine remorse for the mistake.

“This is a case of a good apology that’s sort of surprising because it stands out in such contrast to the tactics of the broader campaign,” said Lewicki.

Indeed, when one considers McIver’s statement within the wider context of the Trump campaign’s response to accusations that Melania’s speech had been at least partially cribbed from Michelle Obama’s, the intended effect of her apology becomes less certain.

The campaign had spent the day after the speech bizarrely denying the plagiarism had taken place (despite the one-in-87 billion chance those words had assembled themselves randomly in about the same order Obama had delivered them), blaming Hillary Clinton for the media attention and even angrily protesting that the plagiarism accusations amounted to an assertion that Obama invented the English language

On top of it all, the candidate himself appeared to revel in the continued media coverage of his wife’s speech, which makes the point of McIver’s apology (to regain trust and start the forgiveness process) suspect, according to Lewicki.

“That’s been a consistent process in the whole Trump campaign to keep the media focus on them by whatever means they need to,” Lewicki concluded. “Which, from my point of view, makes the credibility of the candidate and the campaign sort of questionable.”

Trevor Noah: RNC Is ‘Acting Like America Is Westeros And Winter Is Coming’

South African-born Trevor Noah has compared Donald Trump to the African dictators he’s grown up with, but admitted he was not prepared for the insanity that the reality TV star brought to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“I’m still wrapping my head around the spectacle,” Noah said on Tuesday night’s broadcast of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.” “They had all the biggest stars you could think of … who would agree to come to this event.

“There were actors you forgot about, models you sort of remember, people who call ducks for a living.”

Noah pointed out “reality stars you don’t remember married to congressmen you’ve never heard of” before exclaiming, “I loved it!” That’s because he felt the choice of Z-level speakers fit Trump’s style.

“He always makes sure to bring us so much fun crazy to talk about that we miss the dangerous crazy,” Noah said.

All the speakers at the RNC seemed to be focusing on one theme: “Make America Fear Again.”

“You guys are acting like America is Westeros and winter is coming,” Noah told the GOP. “Forget ‘Make America Safe Again.’ After that, I just wanted to make my underpants dry again.”

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

Florida Zika Case Could Be First Local Transmission In U.S.

(Reuters) – Florida health officials said on Tuesday they are investigating a case of Zika virus infection that does not appear to have stemmed from travel to another region with an outbreak.

The statement from the Florida Department of Health did not specify whether the Zika case was believed to have been transmitted via mosquito bite, sexual contact or other means.

The department said the case was reported in Miami-Dade County and that it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an epidemiological study.

The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus.

“Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup … and distributed in the area under investigation,” the health department said in a statement. “Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of investigation.”

Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect and other neurological conditions, has spread rapidly through the Americas. A small number of cases of Zika transmitted between sexual partners have also been documented.

There has yet to be a case of local transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States, though more than 1,300 people in the country have reported infections after traveling to a Zika outbreak area.

U.S. officials have predicted local outbreaks to begin as the weather warms, particularly in southern states such as Florida and Texas.

Jeremy Corbyn & the People versus the Media

2016-07-18-1468819668-4483126-WestminsterRallyCorbyn.JPG

In future history classrooms, students will likely be told the tale of the tag-team assault on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn by the mainstream media and MPs. It will be taught as a harbinger of what is erupting into the most pivotal crisis facing Western politics in half a century: the chasm between ordinary people and the elites. We are seeing it with the Republican establishment’s failed efforts to derail the Trump train and the Democratic establishment’s more successful efforts to extinguish the Bern. This is an emerging contest in which the opposing sides are defined by an ever-growing wealth gap. The two groups are now viewing each other as adversaries thanks in part to an internet and social media that exposes the disconnect between the mainstream media (MsM) narrative and what the masses feel.

Corbyn, the self-effacing, mild-mannered veteran activist who was elected with a larger mandate than any party leader in British history, and had pleaded for a ‘kinder, gentler politics’, has become the most media-persecuted politician since George Galloway protested the Iraq War. While the right-wing press is expected to be harsh on a Labour leader, biased coverage of Corbyn crosses traditional boundaries, infecting centre-left papers as well. The MsM’s seeming contempt for the people’s decision gives pause to anyone who values democracy, whatever one’s ideological persuasion, whether you agree with Corbyn’s policies or not. The unrelenting bullying of the ordinary Party members’ choice of leader may even represent the death-throes of a ‘politico-media complex’ in futile denial that it has lost the hearts and minds of the masses. We may be witnessing the beginning of the end of what Noam Chomsky eloquently deconstructed in his Manufacturing Consent.

Since Jeremy’s historic victory, the MsM, seemingly in coordination with some MPs, have carried out hit and run attacks. Trawling the bottom of the barrel, they find what might otherwise be un-newsworthy statements or incidents and in unison, twist events to suit the prior agreed upon talking point: Corbyn is a bad leader. Defamation lawsuits are avoided by inserting phrases like ‘Corbyn seemed to’ or ‘appeared to’ before each outlandish accusation. Like any dishonest or poor debater, once the scurrilous claim, outright lie or flimsy argument is disproved by their opponents, they hastily move on to the next attack, creeping under the hitherto reliable darkness of public amnesia. The cynical objective of this approach is to sully the victim’s image by planting vague, amorphous negative associations in the public mind.

This is combined with an ‘authoritative voice’ technique, whereby those critical of Jeremy Corbyn are implied to have some authority or status which in reality they lack. When Corbyn requested an early election following Theresa May’s victory, the Telegraph cited “critics” (not further defined) who labelled it “foolish” and an “attempt to hang on”, despite the Lib Dems and Greens calling for one too. It described “moderate figures” in the National Executive Committee (NEC) using the “party rule book” to insist Corbyn needs the backing of 51 MPs to run in the likely leadership ballot, despite these rules being at the time under dispute and later being found to be in Corbyn’s favour. The BBC earlier stated “Tom Watson is to hold emergency talks on Tuesday with union leaders in a fresh attempt to put pressure on Jeremy Corbyn to resign”. An average reader would assume from this that union leaders are either anti-Corbyn, or are neutral and amenable to Watson’s ‘authority’, when actually, Britain’s major unions had backed Corbyn. The article attempts to flip reality, combining conciliatory, seemingly submissive statements by Jeremy with declarations by ‘some’ anti-Corbyn MPs that there are “strict limits” upon what they would compromise – MPs who have no authority over the leader, much less any mandate to decide who leads, and even less any chance of beating Corbyn at a fair election.

The Telegraph even includes, twice in the same article, an NEC member’s comparison of Corbyn to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, saying “You can’t have people elected for life”. This was in reference to Jeremy’s wish to be, as per the rules, automatically included in the running for a democratic election less than a year after his first democratic election victory. Those who’ve not heard of the NEC before would assume that the body is largely opposed to Corbyn despite that in reality more than half the committee was pro-Corbyn, a fact reinforced by their subsequent decision to vote in his favour on the issue.

A recent London School of Economics study provided academic evidence of what many of us had observed since Corbyn’s election. It found that 74% of newspaper articles on Corbyn did not include his views, or represented his views out of context, with media coverage generally de-legitimizing him as a political actor. The following graph reveals the tone of articles:

2016-07-18-1468820300-4619175-LSECOrbynGraph.bmp
(Source: Couldry, N. and Cammaerts, B., 2016, ‘Journalistic Representations of Jeremy Corbyn in the British Press: From Watchdog to Attackdog’, Media@LSE Report, London, p3)

These techniques have been supported from inside the Party by McCarthyist witch-hunts which provide the MsM machine with an endless stream of victims being expelled, banned and suspended for crimes you never hear the full details of, that have been presided over by internal bureaucrats who have unclear authority and less clear mandates.

The techniques have paid off to some extent, reflecting a reality of the last half century described in Manufacturing Consent. As an Australian expat, I lived in Oxford, and up and down demographically diverse London suburbs, from Hampstead to Essex, from Kensington to Kilburn. I spoke to people of all walks of life and differing party loyalties. Almost all liked Corbyn as a human being. The few negative comments about him pre-referendum included ‘weak leader’ or ‘incompetent’. When pressed as to why, there was usually silence. When informed of his policies on the economy, foreign policy and social issues, there was often agreement, and if not, there was at least a repeating of the concession that ‘he’s a decent guy’. While their positive views toward Corbyn were due to his policies, record or values, negative associations seemed based on nothing more than the media’s assiduously repeated talking points.

After the referendum chaos, there was something more solid to hang on the embattled man, gleefully provided by Media Inc. People said either ‘he was weak/lazy in his campaigning for Remain’ or ‘he disingenuous as he was a secret Leave supporter’. When it is offered that, in the long line of politicians upon whom to heap Brexit blame, perhaps the guy who campaigned against it should be after those who made calculated political decisions to support it, my fellow converser usually remembers that people like Nigel Farage also exist.

Also pervasive is the media-induced fallacy that the leader of the Labour Party’s job description includes “above all, convince voters to Remain”. Corbyn, like most ordinary people, considers each issue through the prism of his value-system. From a left wing perspective the EU had pros and cons, the latter driving the left wing leave campaign ‘Lexit’. For Corbyn, the Remain proposition may have been somewhere over 50% but less than 100% righteous, say 70% for example. So he would be consistent with his principles to devote only 70% of scarce time and resources to it. For causes he believed in 100%, he would exert more effort, as his 30 year record proves beyond doubt. Reasonable, given members elected him primarily to fight austerity, for a peaceful foreign policy etc, not for remaining in the EU. Beyond that, Corbyn’s performance on Brexit was not even that bad. Over two thirds of Labour voters elected to Remain, far more than the Conservatives. His efforts were even praised by then would-be leadership challenger Angela Eagle.

We are expected to believe that, despite the same media sources casually reporting Labour MPs coup-plotting on and off since Corbyn’s election, the Brexit vote was somehow an unexpected, qualitatively unique justification for his ousting. In fact, articles as recently as March suggested that a coup was likely should Labour perform sufficiently poorly in local council elections. Labour performed better than expected, necessitating a new excuse.

The further line of attack is that which was used early in the US presidential primaries to dismiss Bernie Sanders’ candidacy, the old go-to: un-electability. The UK journalists and politicians peddling this line must think that the public have no access to news from across the Atlantic, as this talking point was turned on its head by poll after poll showing Bernie would lay waste to D Trump when Hillary was barely beating him.

Most people, however, are declining the Kool-aid on offer. Throughout the West, the chasm between the elite and the other 99% is unprecedented, not only in wealth distribution, but in the perceptions of politics and politicians. The system of manufacturing consent is facing an unprecedented challenge, one that seems still wilfully ignored in the MsM echo chamber.

On the inside, 172 MPs voted no confidence in Corbyn in a secret ballot, avoiding accountability to local party members. The puzzling arrogance and flippant dismissal of the public will was on full display when Ian Austin MP, who opposed an inquiry into the Iraq War at least three times, told Corbyn – who had protested against Saddam in the 80s when he gassed the Kurds and opposed the 2003 invasion (right side of history on both counts) – to “sit down and shut-up” during his parliamentary apology following Chilcot. Politicians’ antipathy to Corbyn has been as consistent as JC’s record on Iraq. When he began his journey as leader New Labour stalwarts were wheeled out to express their dismay at an ‘unelectable’ being permitted to occupy such a hallowed seat.

However, in a shocking act of impertinence, Labour members chose someone who actually held the same views as them. Corbyn won with a thumping majority of 59.5%, annihilating his closest rivals who received 19% and 17%, with the Blairite candidate bringing up the rear with 4.5%, suggesting a repudiation of New Labour. Who would have predicted that members of a party built on a workers’ movement would have rejected an ideology that Margaret Thatcher referred to as her greatest achievement? Labour membership swelled to vote in Corbyn as old school ‘true believers’ returned to the fold, joining hands with millennials filled with indignation nourished through a bypassing of the MsM and reliance upon the internet which had exposed to them unjustness of the present reality. In just the final 24 hours before the deadline, the Party received over 160,000 applications to vote. There were three surges in membership in 2015: one after the election, one after Corbyn entered the leadership race and another when he became leader.

The most recent threats to their fragile input into democracy have ordinary people again doing what little they can to defend Corbyn. A vote of confidence petition for Jeremy received around 200,000 signatures in a few days. A rival petition calling for his ouster ignominiously received around 100 signatures in the same period. After about a week the anti-Corbyn petition had 232 signatures and the pro-Corbyn petition 257,000, a ratio of roughly 1:1000 (possibly the same ratio of remaining Blairites to left wingers amongst Labour members). Pro-Corbyn group Momentum had around 54,000 likes on Facebook, while the anti-Corbyn camp had roughly 4,000.

100,000 people joined the Labour Party in the days after the coup was launched, most of them to support Jeremy. Within hours’ notice, 10,000 people turned up to a pro-Corbyn Momentum rally next to the very Parliament inside which their deepest beliefs now seemed to occupy such low regard; a massive display of passion and sacrifice by people who can’t afford to take time off work, have families to look after and most likely live nowhere near Westminster. Membership is set to reach 600,000, making British Labour the biggest social democratic party in the Western world. This is what democracy looks like.

It’s not only Party members whose views are being studiously ignored by the MsM. The actual electorate’s opinions are also seemingly irrelevant to media assessments of Corbyn’s electability. In Jeremy’s tenure, Labour has won all four by-elections, including with increased majorities, performed better in local elections than under predecessor Ed Miliband and won the London and Bristol mayoralties. Overall, polls show Labour trailing the Conservatives by a smaller margin, 4%, pre and post-referendum under Corbyn’s leadership than in the final months of Miliband’s tenure where it trailed by between 6 and 14%.

Additionally, Corbyn’s monumental popularity amongst Labour members and the explosion of membership numbers provides a key advantage in a country without compulsory voting: an enormous, enthusiastic army of volunteers to execute the all-important ground-game that carried Obama to victory twice. With the poor being underrepresented in voter turnout in Britain, this presents a significant electoral opportunity that can be tapped not through centrist pragmatism but via passionate supporters. People, more than advertising, can convince people to get out and vote. And as the referendum’s colossal turnout proved, when they’re mad at the establishment, they’ll turn out in droves.

Given this and the example set by Bernie Sanders, you could only honestly describe Corbyn as definitively unelectable if you’d stumbled into the Large Hadron Collider and entered a parallel universe which combines Orwell’s 1984 and Seinfeld’s Bizzaro World. That or you obtain all your ‘news’ from the mainstream media, which has created its own Orwellian bubble. Black is white, up is down. Victims of racism, and veterans sporting battle scars from a lifetime of fighting racism, are labelled bigots. Supporters of the elected leader are castigated for dividing the Party. Politicians most in touch with the current popular anti-establishment mood are lampooned as relics of the past. Headlines report an attack on Corbyn by an ‘LGBT activist’ while dutifully omitting any reference to Jeremy’s long history of LGBT activism, including back when it wasn’t fashionable.

The MsM, reassured within its echo-chamber, has mistakenly continued to assume each one of us believes that all our neighbours buy this, that everyone else supports the officially sanctioned line and you’d be a tinfoil-hat-crackpot not to. Instead, a thing called the internet and its social media component have empowered ordinary people to, at least to some extent, see what their fellow citizens really think and connect with them.

These platforms have become stages upon which a rebuff is occurring, one as embarrassing to the MsM as the leadership vote. Article after article, Youtube video after video produced by the MsM touts the official talking points proclaiming Corbyn and other Left figures’ incompetence, bigotry, unpopularity etc. In every one of these, however, a quick scroll down to the comments section reveals hundreds of real people, almost exclusively saying the opposite of what the article/video instructed them to think.

When thousands of indignant ordinary people launch criticisms of MsM and political elites on social media, they are dismissed as bullying trolls. Those nakedly conspiring to destroy Corbyn maintain such a self-entitled mentality that they seem to expect him to drop to his knees and apologise to them for every tiny scratch they incur in the course of jamming knives into his back.

‘Trolling’ was originally coined to describe the act of abusing or lampooning someone on the internet purely for sadistic pleasure, not the legitimate expression of discontent by everyday people with no other platform. These are not billionaires who own shares of media corporations that can pedantically twist any story to serve their masters’ interests. When even the one avenue to affect government policies that ordinary working people felt they had finally attained – having a say in a major political party – seems to have been snatched away from them, what else are they to do?

A poignant example of the ‘troll-shaming’ of ordinary people occurred with the intervention of JK Rowling who tweeted the following picture which was re-broadcast by the mainstream media.

2016-07-18-1468822550-5649310-ProtesterRowlingpicgood.bmp

Rowling – with net worth $ 1 billion – in front of her enormous Twitter following criticised this man who is unlikely to have had access to such resources to promote his viewpoint. All he had was a t-shirt. But even that was too much.

In spite of JK’s accusation, it is unlikely he wore the t-shirt for comedic effect. More likely he is expressing frustration at policies that probably hurt him more than billionaires like Rowling. His anger may even be based on altruistic opposition to Blair’s foreign policies. But because a extreme right winger, holding views diametrically opposite to the man pictured, tragically murdered an MP, this elderly left wing protester should be denied the right to express his opinion through even the humblest of means.

Like Bernie, Jeremy is an outsider in both policy and style: genuine, slightly scruffy, even being castigated to “put on a proper suit” during Prime Minister’s Questions. He abjures the ruthless, focus-group talking points-led tactics of more polished operators; his mere existence enraging some because it shines light on their own vacuity. He speaks openly about big issues that impact people’s daily lives. Corbyn’s rise signifies that the game has changed, that values and principles are now political capital, not political baggage. The baby-boomer almost stands out as a festering indictment of some of his colleagues who, through no fault of their own, came of political age in the post-historical 1990s when careerism filled the void left by idealism.

Like with Bernie in America and across the Western world, the people are not fighting for one man. They are fighting for themselves, for each other and for those overseas who have even less say in the policies that may impact them most. They are fighting for change. Defaming, bullying, interrogating and tearing asunder the humble, elderly Jeremy Corbyn amounts to spitting in the face of the alienated masses he represents. The ‘manufacturing of consent’ is no longer consensual. Now, what you do to Corbyn, you do to them.

The chasm between the masses and the elites, represented by the out-of-touch MsM, threatens not only democracy and justice, but also stability. Since Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Reaganomics and Thatcherism, ordinary people have watched inequality skyrocket to levels unprecedented in modern history while being lectured by the MsM that spending even the paltriest sums on the most essential services for our fellow human beings is unrealistic. Any leader that disagrees is tagged unelectable – despite the small fact that 99% of the population has 99 times more votes than the 1%. But the top 1% of the world own more than the remaining 99%. Ordinary people feel not only that they have no wealth but thanks to the MsM, no voice. This flammable combination of injustice and disempowerment exploded in the 210,000 strong tide of Labour members voting in Corbyn the first time. Now, with a re-election contest forthcoming and the overwhelming odds stacked against them being unmasked, the people are doing what little they can to shield the flickering candle that had been so hard to ignite for so long…until the time when it can spread into a roaring bonfire that lights up the night.

Understanding: Wants Vs. Needs

2016-07-15-1468611389-7532558-shutterstock_449670994.jpg

Wants vs Needs

How often do we create mountains out of molehills? We should start by defining our needs and our wants. What qualifies as a need? What is a want?

A need is something you have to do. A want is something you would like to do. I often confuse them. There are days when I take my needs for granted and sacrifice them at the expense of my wants.

Let me start with some examples:

My medications
My bedtime
Work projects
Parenting time with my kids
Paying my bills
Weeding my property
Exercising
Following my food plan

… The list goes on.

I used to think all of these were needs. And as you can see by the list, they don’t all seem reasonable to complete in a day. As a result, I would improperly prioritize those items I felt would yield the largest gain or results.

I focused on growing my business, because if my business was successful, everything else would fall into order behind it (or so I thought). But I didn’t realize that neglecting myself and my actual needs was a serious issue. I believed I was too busy to get the rest of the list done.

Since embracing mindful thinking, I have been able to accomplish everything on the list, and more. I realized that the more time I found for myself, the more time I had for everyone else.

Waking up this morning, I immediately centered myself with gratitude, spirituality and mindfulness. This week, I took my medications daily and made sure that my bedtime was consistent. Everything else today is a by-product of those good behaviors and habits. I naturally had time and energy to follow my food plan. (I even found time to walk a few miles while working and ride my exercise bike today.)

After that, I was able to spend time with my kids: watching their shows before and after dinner, reading to them before they went to sleep, and hearing something good from each of them regarding their days.

The one thing I didn’t have time for today was beating myself up or playing the victim. Was I perfect in my quest today? No. My inboxes aren’t empty. Yet. They are smaller than they were yesterday and I found acceptance about not requiring them to be empty each and every day.

The reality is that an empty inbox is a want – not a need. Realizing this allowed me to focus more of my time on my needs and less on my wants. An amazing thing happened…I found the time I needed for my wants because my needs were being taken care of at the exact same time.

Don’t let perfect ruin good! And don’t let good ruin doing something!

I used to let the desire for perfection paralyze me and prevent me from moving forward. The perception that I could not work on my wants until all my needs were perfectly satisfied was crippling; the only thing I ever did perfectly was nothing.

Since then, I have learned that the only ‘right’ way to do something is to get moving. In meditation, gratitude, and spiritual practice something is always better than nothing!

Get Your Family Off The Couch This Summer With These 5 Simple Tips

Summer is the perfect time for the entire family to refresh their focus on healthy habits. The kids are out of school, camps are back in session, and even the coldest, snowiest parts of the country are rebuilding relationships with the sun. But with all the freedom that summer brings, it can be easy to fall into a routine of sitting on couches, watching television and overeating.

The best defense against letting idle relaxation become your summer routine? Structure. Incorporating a mix of season-savoring activities, adventures and changes of scenery into your schedule can help you and your family stay healthy and active all summer long. Need a head start? Here are five ideas I love, coupled with important advice from like-minded friends of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation.

1. Jump in the water.
family sprinkler
Whether it’s in a lake, a pool or even with a hose in the yard, cooling down with a splash of H20 is an American pastime that’s fun for all ages. Plus, swimming is a great aerobic exercise that will help with your aches and pains. But remember to be safe, too, the water safety advocacy group the ZAC Foundation advises. An adult should always supervise a child in or around water. If you’re in a group, appoint designated “water watchers” to keep an eye on swimmers in 15-minute intervals with no distractions.

2. Hike a trail.
Looking for an activity that can last you either an hour or an entire day? Hit the local trails! The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy recommends families pack a bag of essentials, like liquids, snacks, sunscreen, maybe even a ball to toss around, and lace up some comfortable shoes. Want to speed things up a bit? Strap on some rollerblades or hop on a bike (wear a helmet!) and experience the outdoors with a breeze in your face. Great exercise and great fun. Win, win!

3. Go outside.
family basketball
The possibilities are endless when you take a step outside with an open mind. Set up a neighborhood game of kickball. Draw on the sidewalk with chalk. Set up an obstacle course. Go for a run. There is no better way to enjoy summer than by playing outside. But, as the Road Runners Club of America says, remember to be smart in the heat. If you become dizzy or nauseated, have the chills or cease to sweat, find shade and drink fluids. But if you keep your safety in mind throughout the day, you’ll be in for hours of fun!

4. Create a family-wide fitness challenge.
Set a physical activity goal for each member of your family. Whether you’re doing five situps or 10 pushups a day, create a chart that holds everyone accountable. To make the competition more “interesting,” the childhood obesity educators at The OrganWise Guys recommend that each family member select a reward (non-food!) ahead of time, and the family can then motivate and compete to reach individual goals by the end of the month. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone!

5. Share family meals.
outdoor meal
At the cornerstone of family time, there is usually a tasty meal. Eating together as a family has been shown time and again to offer a variety of health benefits. And, according to Healthy Dining Finder, it doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to be dinner and it doesn’t have to be at the dining room table! Whatever shape it takes for your family, the act of sharing a meal together is the priority.

What are some of your favorite summer activities?

Trump Plans To Steal The Spotlight Back With Cabinet Announcements

WASHINGTON ― Frustrated at the lack of enthusiasm for his vice presidential pick Mike Pence, Donald Trump is now telling those close to him that he wants a do-over of sorts, which he aims to get by rolling out the names of potential cabinet members, a source who spoke to Trump told The Huffington Post.

Trump was disappointed with the rollout of Pence, and the reaction to him, on several levels. He was first piqued that the news leaked before he’d gotten around to telling the runners-up, Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie, about his choice. He then had second thoughts, postponed the announcement and spent Thursday night trying to find a way to back out of his choice, according to multiple news reports and the source close to Trump.

Trump sees Pence as a politically safe but unexciting choice, the source said. When non-politicians fantasize about running for president, they delight in imagining the unorthodox, thrilling running mate they might choose. For Trump to have ended up paired with such a standard pol, after a year of violating every campaign norm in the book, must be a major letdown.

Multiple sources say that Trump wants to name Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, as his attorney general, although knowing Trump, he could change his mind at any moment. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law who plays a major role in the campaign, fought against Christie as a VP pick, as reported this week by HuffPost blogger Laura Goldman and later corroborated elsewhere.

Retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, whom Trump at one point floated as a potential VP, will surely be on the short list for defense secretary, unless of course Kid Rock makes himself available.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

The Pioneer Plaque

“It’s a kindness that the mind can go where it wishes.” ― Ovid, “The Poems of Exile: Tristia and the Black Sea Letters”

“Language is the only homeland.” ― Czesław Miłosz

“These are all I have. I do not have the wide, bright beacon of some solid old lighthouse, guiding ships safely home, past the jagged rocks. I only have these little glimmers that flicker and then go out.” ― Rebecca Wells, “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”

The Silent Languages

It is Day Two of one of my headaches, which usually last for three. It is morning, and I am in bed, my head wrapped in a black-and-white Yasser Arafat scarf, one forearm pressed hard against my skull and the other resting on my husband’s chest.

It is on this latter arm that the jazz musician with whom I live is “playing,” with the fingers of one hand, a tune. A silent tune, as my skinny forearm is no trumpet.

Dean knows that, while the pain in my left temple is relentless, language–of any sort–will tempt me out of the hole down which pain thrusts me. Eventually, I will have to know . . . what tune he is playing. Eventually, the language which he speaks so fluently, and hears constantly within his cranium, and which I can only hear (and then, imperfectly), when a band performs it, will charm me (as the flute, the cobra).

“What are you playing?” I ask, eventually.

He smiles and, in his endearing falsetto, pipes a bar or two. “‘Spring is Here,'” he interjects.

“By?”

“Rodgers and Hart. Stan Kenton.”

“So, I have an entire orchestra playing here? On my arm?”

The fingers are onto something else, however. “Now, what?”

“‘Yesterdays.’ By Kern and Harbach. Stan Kenton again, though.”

Not skipping a beat, he begins ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy.’

Lying here, in almost total silence, one of us speaking through the fingers of a hand, the other listening, clumsily, through the skin of a forearm, we are something like the members of two early, isolated tribes of homo sapiens, upon first contact. I will never have time enough to learn the language-of-jazz in which my spouse has been steeped since early childhood. And, by this point in our marriage, I know he will never learn the proper use of “went” and “gone”: his participles will remain, for this grammarian, blood-curdling, lo, unto the grave, whichever of us arrives there first.

“I’ve never went to . . .” says Dean.

“Gone to!” says Elizabeth. “Gone!*&%”

When one of us is in pain, in the little co-mingled tribe that is this marriage, the silent languages predominate: those comprising simply sounds, as opposed to words; those expressed through touch.

Throughout my husband’s surgery of a month ago, and my own headaches, we have spoken, for the most part, without a lot of words. In fact, because I myself am so beset and beleaguered by words, living with a musician, who communicates primarily and happily and by choice via sounds alone, most of those sounds mediated by instruments (and, so, at a remove of one or two from the human breath or the human hand, or both), I have found being with Dean a relief, a refuge.

In our house, there is much music, but most of it comes without lyrics.

Which is not to say we do not communicate profoundly. We communicate, with all our various languages, signs, and signals, across most silences and distances. But we speak best, usually, without words.

What, I wonder, did Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis “say,” upon first encountering one another, over 100,000 years ago, somewhere in the Middle East? What was communicated in that first gaze?

In the way that we “use” language, and considering the languages we have chosen to learn well, even over the short course of our shared time on the planet, my husband and I could be members of different species. Here, we have an instance of Homo trumpetensis taking up residence with Homo comma-oxfordensis
.
No wonder one of us seems always to have a headache (she said, smiling).

Lost in Translation: “Saudade” & “Hiraeth”

We are losing human languages, year by year, as we lose the last native speakers of each.

Languages go extinct with their speakers, unless studied, recorded, and preserved for prosperity, and many, many human languages (I think, just, of all the extinct aboriginal languages of Australia) were gone before . . . we knew it. In this new century, with the death of their last-standing native speakers, we have lost Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with at least 14 other distinct tongues.

Tongues: given my husband’s (and Koko the gorilla’s]) fluent fingers, tongues and breath are not essential for communication, but most languages may still be called tongues.

Language has ever been based on breath. And tongues. Both human.

And, with every year, and every year of globalization, the tongues we speak decline in number. Soon, we will be left with what, which? Chinese? Spanish? English? Hindi? And, then? Just Chinese?

I grieve the loss of all tongues for, in and through each, we have expressed what is almost impossible to express in others.

There is one, solitary Portuguese word, saudade, for example, which originated in Galician, and for which English (and perhaps all other languages) has no twin, no cognate (or “blood relative”).

Saudade (as per Wikipedia) “describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. A stronger form of saudade might be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died. Saudade was once described as ‘the love that remains’ after someone is gone.

Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone (e.g., one’s children, parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets) or something (e.g., places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past) that should be there in a particular moment but is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling.

“In Portuguese, Tenho saudades tuas(European Portuguese) or Tenho saudades de você (Brazilian Portuguese), translates as ‘I have saudade of you,’ meaning ‘I miss you,’ but carries a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have saudade of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future.

“In Brazil, the Day of Saudade is officially celebrated on 30 January.”

I, myself, “have saudade of” the lost languages of Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with the other 14 tongues which have gone extinct since the year 2000. I have saudade, as well, of all those lost languages whose names I will never even know.

For me, in a sense, every day is The Day of Saudade.

And then, there is the Welsh word hiraeth. Wikipedia: “The University of Wales, Lampeter, attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.

“Oxford and Merriam-Webster define hiraeth as: (noun) ‘a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was.’

If this sounds familiar: “Hiraeth bears considerable similarities with the Portuguese concept of saudade (a key theme in Fado music), Brazilian Portuguese banzo (more related to homesickness), Turkish gurbet, Galician morriña, Romanian dor.”

So, whatever language we speak, or no longer speak, we Homo sapiens, trumpetensis, and/or comma-oxfordensis, have coined a plethora of words with which to express À la recherche du temps perdu.

Extinction is a concept with which we have long been acquainted, but with which we are never, ever, comfortable.

Breath & Dragon’s Breath

Recently, in my ongoing, Oedipal, and Conradian quest to nail down just when and through what mechanism runaway climate change will effect the Sixth Extinction, a planetary cataclysm resembling the great Permian die-off, in which fully 83 percent of Earth’s genera went extinct, I came across a long, peer-reviewed article by marine biologist Dr. Ronald L. Shimek, former chair of the Biology Department at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, assistant director of the Bamfield Marine Science Centre on Vancouver Island, Canada, and a “CORAL Magazine” senior editor. (The version of the essay which I cite here, and which is available online is this one: http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/22/dragon-watch/)

Dr. Shimek, while researching coral reef extinctions, one of his areas of expertise, stumbled upon the research of Dr. Natalia E. Shakhova, “a Russian oceanographer and geologist who has been studying the permafrost methane distribution throughout the offshore region of the Laptev Sea known as the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf (or ESAS in scientific circles) and the adjacent onshore areas.”

Shakhova’s research has been in another neck of our shared woods, entirely, from that of Shimek. Her focus is the release of methane into the atmosphere, and the probability that the next great planetary extinction will be caused by a catastrophic release of the gas also known as “Dragon’s Breath.”

Quoting from Shimek’s piece: “[Shakhova] estimates the [methane] clathrate deposits in the ESAS to be between hundreds and thousands of gigatons. This is not easy to visualize, but the total mass of carbon in living plants and animals on Earth has been estimated at 500 gigatons, making these buried deposits of solidified methane unimaginably huge in the true sense of the word. Some observers have dubbed the collective, buried power of these deposits the ‘Methane Dragon.'”

Shimek continues: “In 2010, Shakhova and her co-workers estimated that a catastrophic methane release in excess of 50 gigatons (a minuscule percentage of what is in that area) is possible at any time. She said, and continues to assert, that such a catastrophic release could take place over a period of one to ten years. The fear is not the potential explosive effect–terrifying caribou in the wild, barren north–but rather the massive infusion of enormous clouds of potent greenhouse gas into Earth’s atmosphere. As a result of her work, the question that needs to be asked is this: ‘Are her estimates of catastrophic release reasonable and possible? And, if they are, what difference would that make?'”

Shimek concludes his essay (and what can I really do but quote him at length?): “When and how things might unfold is profoundly uncertain, but the trigger point for the short-term catastrophic methane release postulated by Dr. Shakhova could be a temperature rise as low as an additional 1.5°C or as high as an additional 10°C. These are not the rantings of fearmongers, but scenarios described by respected Arctic oceanographers. The 50-gigaton decadal methane pulse scenario posited by Shakhova, Semiletov, and Alekseev, who are probably the leading experts on Arctic methane and methane ices, is considered plausible by scientists at the UK Meteorology Office, as well as multiple scientific reviews, including one written by more than 20 Arctic specialists. Current Arctic atmospheric methane concentrations are unprecedented, but the best minds believe that if 50 Gt were added to the atmosphere, conditions would become very bad, very fast. It would be, some experts fear, the beginning of ‘runaway global warming’ that humans would be powerless to stop.

“Given an effective meltdown of methane clathrates in the Arctic, climate expert Dr. Malcolm Light has estimated global temperatures of around 50°C above averages between the years 2040 and 2050. In summer, if the normal average had been 30°C (for example, where I live in Montana), the post-methane belch temperature would rise to 80°C or 176°F.

“While the timing is unclear, the consequences can be predicted with some certainty. They include: Complete melting of polar ice caps; global flooding; Disruption of global ocean currents and gyres; demise of oceanic fisheries; Crop and food production failures; Spread of disease and parasites; Collapse of power grids and transportation systems; Mass human mortality in heat and cold waves; Catastrophic breakdowns in political, economic, and societal stability.”

Shimek concludes: “There is no easy way to write these words: Should such an event occur, it is certain that the coral reefs I set out to research would have no chance of survival. More to the point, most of us would perish.”

While We Have Breath

Other scientists believe all of us will perish, and the event will occur before the end of the current century. Day by day, I review the science, and it seems, to me, incontrovertible. The Sixth Extinction, the one brought about by mankind, will occur in the lifetime of our grandchildren, and it will snuff out every last creature “with breath,” and most without, on our shared planet.

If I, with my small knowledge of science, know this truth to be self-evident, how long will it take my peers in “The Reading West” to surpass me in my researches? I would like to think that many, many of us will come “online” with the science rapidly, and turn global attention to what appears to be just ahead for us all.

In thinking out loud about extinction here, I have begun with the extinction of languages but, perhaps just after my own sojourn on the planet ends, and the small extinction my death will signify, language itself will become extinct along with any being who parsed, or will ever parse, language.

Based upon and an expression of the consciousness of Homo sapiens (and Homo sapiens‘ forebears), language–the concept, the thing itself–will disappear with us, as though it, and we, never were.

Floating through space on the wings of Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts were, are, the so-called Pioneer plaques, humankind’s early-1970s “messages in a bottle” to the universe. If and when they are “received,” and if ever they are “understood” by other beings–a possibility so remote as to defy all probability–perhaps someone, somewhere, in some dimension, may know that we lived and breathed: but the likelihood of our still being here then appears nil.

The enormity of that realization is now being pondered by relatively few homo sapiens, but will affect each and every one of us, whether we choose to inform ourselves, or not.

And many of us–the current ponderers–believe the time has long since passed when we might have avoided the iceberg, or the dragon’s breath. The time now is for pondering alone. For facing the music as we can.

Readers still with me here may want to explore the writings of Dr. Guy McPherson and, perhaps, join me on Facebook in the (closed) group, Near Term Human Extinction Support Group.

We who speak and breathe and touch and sing now face the end of humankind’s tenure on Earth, and we will together be choosing how we face it; not if, or when.

While I have breath, and while I may be heard, I will continue saying, “Choose. Choose how we go forward. Choose together.”

We have no other choices left us, we who coined the words saudade and hiraeth.

How To Sleep When Horrific News Becomes The Norm

Last night more than 260 civilians were killed in violent clashes with military forces in Istanbul.

The night before, at least 84 people lost their lives when a truck deliberately zigzagged through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Two weeks ago Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were shot and killed by police and five police officers were gunned down by a sniper. The previous month, 49 people were killed by a shooter at an iconic gay nightclub in Orlando.

And scores of other shootingsbombings and tragedies have happened in the days and hours in between.

We heard the stories. We saw the pictures. We watched terror happen on video.

Mothersfatherssonsdaughtersloverscolleaguesfriends and the man from down the street who “would have gave you the shirt off his back” lost their lives.

For victims’ loved ones, the grief is immeasurable. For African-Americans, the pain of watching police brutality against black people comes with a toll of its own. For people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, the hurt of an attack against their own community is agonizing.

People intimately affected by these tragedies experience emotions that others of us cannot fathom.

But even for those without a personal connection to these terrible events, sadness and pain are still a reality.

We feel pain even if we’re not involved

If you see, hear or even read about something traumatic ― even if you’re not directly involved ― you can still have an emotional response, Robert Hawkins, an associate professor at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, told The Huffington Post.

“This is trauma that doesn’t necessarily happen to you or you didn’t necessarily experience, but you become affected by it,” he said.

It can be worse if you identify with those affected, explained David Kaplan, chief professional officer at the American Counseling Association.

“If you relate to the person who was attacked in any way, you’re going to grieve because it’s also part of you,” Kaplan told HuffPost previously.

But that grief, while normal and expected, can lead to stress and sleeplessness.

“With the frequency of shootings and terror attacks there is a sense of anxiety that’s building in people,” Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychologist in Washington, D.C., told The New York Times ― “a sense of vulnerability and powerlessness.”

Traumatic life events are among the biggest causes of anxiety and depression, research suggests. But experts say taking steps to care for yourself ― including taking care of your sleep ― is what helps you cope best with that stress.

Stress causes chemical changes in our bodies

Not sleeping is the body’s natural response after hearing about and watching disturbing events, according to sleep psychologist Jason Ong of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

When the body releases stress hormones, the emotion-processing areas of the brain stay on, suppressing some of its sleep-promoting systems, he said. Even though your body knows you’re tired, your brain knows something is wrong and you need to deal with it.

The bottom line: research shows that when we’re stressed, the chemical and biological changes in our bodies can interfere with our sleep.

That stress and sleeplessness is important to address early, experts say, before it leads to long-term cycles of mental health problems and chronic insomnias (which can grow from cycles of short-term insomnias).

“Anxiety and insomnia can feed each other and become a cycle,” the National Sleep Foundation says.

Here are seven self-care tips that can help you deal with worries and sleep better:

1. Talk about what’s bothering you

A big part of dealing with a tragedy is expressing your emotions, said Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist and author of Stop Worrying and Go to Sleep: How to Put Insomnia to Bed for Good. “If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid,’” he previously told HuffPost.

If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid.’
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recommends that you talk to family and friends about how you’re feeling.

2. Do things that help you relax

Relaxation and meditation techniques help ease stress and can be especially helpful before bed, said Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

3. Don’t change your sleep routines

Losing sleep at night might make that snooze button more tempting. But picking up poor sleep habits just makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night, Orma said.

If you’re not a regular nap-taker, don’t start. Avoid sleeping in later than usual. And don’t suddenly start taking sleep medications because you may grow dependent on them, he said.

4. Turn off the news at night

Leave a news-free buffer of at least 30 to 45 minutes before you try to sleep to allow yourself to relax, Ong said. Limiting your exposure to media coverage of violence will help you relax and sleep better.

5. Practice good sleep hygiene

It might sound obvious, but it’s worth noting that the times that you’re more likely to have trouble sleeping are when it’s most important to do the things that are good for sleep, Zee said. Exercise during the day, but not too close to bedtime. Get some sun during the day, but avoid bright lighter later at night (which can make it harder for you to fall asleep and actually make you sleep worse).

6. Give yourself a break

You need to tell yourself it’s ok to have a few nights of poor sleep, Orma said. The more you beat yourself up for not sleeping well and the more upset you get about it, the more anxious you can become about not sleeping and fuel the sleepless cycle.

Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child… in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way.
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

“Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child. You would talk in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way,” Orma told HuffPost previously. “You wouldn’t freak them out.”

7. Get the help you need

If coping on your own or with your family members is not enough, talk to a psychologist or licensed medical health professional, recommends the American Psychological Association.

While there is no one timeline that fits everyone for how long it should take for a trauma to subside, the APA says you might benefit from seeking professional help if you feel overwhelmed by sadness or helplessness, if the problem doesn’t seem to be getting better after talking with family and friends or if you find it difficult to maintain your everyday routine.

Donald Trump Says He’s Raised $51 Million. The Actual Numbers Are Starting To Come In.

WASHINGTON ― Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says he raised $ 51 million in conjunction with the Republican National Committee and state party organizations in June, his first full month of fundraising from donors.

Unknown when he announced this haul last week was how it would be split between his campaign, the RNC, and special RNC accounts that can’t be used for the 2016 election.

Thanks to two campaign finance filings on Friday, the breakdown of the funds is becoming clearer.

Trump Victory, the joint fundraising committee linking the Trump campaign, the RNC and 11 state parties, raised $ 25.7 million in June and the final week of May. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee linking the Trump campaign and the RNC, raised $ 6.7 million over the same time period.

So far, the Trump Victory campaign has transferred only $ 2.2 million to the Trump campaign. Another $ 10.1 million was transferred to the RNC, but only $ 4.3 million of that is available for the RNC’s general election fund. The rest is split between three special party accounts ― convention, building and legal ― that were created by the Republican-controlled Congress in the 2014 omnibus budget bill. The convention account got $ 3.3 million, the building account got $ 1.5 million, and the legal account got $ 1 million. The committee ended the month with $ 12 million in undistributed funds.

The Trump Make America Great Again Committee has not yet distributed its funds to either the Trump campaign or the RNC. It appears that nearly all, if not all, of its $ 6.7 million in contributions will wind up in the Trump campaign’s coffers. This is because the largest contributions are $ 5,400, the maximum a donor can give to the Trump campaign. Every dollar over $ 5,400 would rebound to the RNC. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee was one vehicle the Trump campaign used to raise small-donor funds online, and it shows. The majority of its funds ― $ 4.3 million ― were raised from donors giving under $ 200.

Overall, the two joint fundraising committees raised $ 32.6 million ― $ 18.4 million short of Trump’s announced $ 51 million. That difference could have all been raised by Trump’s campaign. Or not.

It is Trump, after all.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

My Love Letter To You

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

The Kind Flexitarian

2016-07-16-1468631710-5276425-1280x720Mv0.jpg

The term “flexitarian” has been coined to describe someone who eats a primarily whole food, plant-based diet, but also sneaks in a big of meat every now and again. Celebrity cookbook author and chef, Mark Bittman, uses this term, and has recently moved away from a meat-centric diet. His new schtick is that he’s strictly vegan all day long, and in the evening he eats whatever he wants. I find this a little odd from a health perspective because if you’re going to toss a big grass-fed steak down your gullet, you’re much better off eating it at lunch time when your body has the rest of the day to digest it/work it off. But moving on from the Mark Bittman (who I love), I’m seeing flexitarians cropping up everywhere here in LA – almost as many as the Paleo crowd. And both groups of “health conscious” eaters are eating meat – in the case of Paleo’s, a LOT of meat. However, are they really “conscious”?

I personally choose not to eat animal flesh. I totally used to. Actually, I include a bunch of meat recipes in my second book (The Gorgeously Green Diet 2009), and do a deep dive into the benefits of truly grass-fed (as opposed to grass-finished) meat. But over the past 5 years I’ve changed. I’ve realized that I don’t need to eat animal flesh to be healthy, and that in many ways I am healthier, stronger, and more energetic without. I’ve also become a way more “conscious” eater in that I really think long and hard about how every mouthful is produced, and in the case of animals, I just couldn’t deny that fact that animal welfare doesn’t get taken into consideration 99.9% of the time (even when it’s implied that it does). I don’t call myself a vegan, because it’s a label (not a big fan of labels), and I do (very occasionally) eat a little fish.

I am totally NON-JUDGEMENTAL of people who enjoy eating meat, so if you are one of them, please don’t stop reading. My entire family are meat-eaters, and so I’ve learned to live and let live. I’m also not opposed to handling or cooking meat for those who must eat it – like my 15 year-old daughter who says she will NEVER not eat meat. It’s kind of the reverse of the many teens who, much to their parent’s consternation, suddenly go vegan. Since I’m a total health nut, my daughter delights in seeing my reaction to her tucking into a box of Fruity Pebbles (not the Whole Foods healthy version either).

But my reason for writing this post about a kind flexitarian is because I was invited to a private screening of the recently released film, At The Fork. It’s a beautifully crafted documentary about exactly how animals are raised for human consumption in America. It is non-judgmental, sensitive, and deep – really DEEP. The filmmaker/director John Papola is a meat-eater, and his wife, Lisa, is not. The film opens with John’s family tearing into huge racks of beef ribs, hot off the grill – an annual family tradition. His wife loads her plate with veggies. Husband and wife make clear their individual stances on meat-eating, and off they go to explore how our meat is produced.

I brought my meat-eating (only about once a week if that, cos I’m hard on his case), husband to the screening. After the film we stayed to participate in the panel, where John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods Market (who was involved in the film), sat with the director and producers to answer questions. We then went out for a fantastic vegan meal!!!

So, what was my main takeaway? The film made me cry a number of times. They feature a lot of pigs. I love pigs, and because I was raised around them, I know that they are highly intelligent. The film also made me laugh – there were some beautiful and very funny moments. Unlike so many of the meat-bashing documentaries out there (designed to turn everyone in vegans overnight), this film doesn’t bash anyone over the head. The director John, is brazenly honest, and openly discusses his struggle about forgetting the suffering he might have just witnessed at an appalling factory farm, once a few days have gone by – and especially when faced with the smell of a delicious burger or steak on the grill. His wife is devastated by the fact that he seems not to have the same lasting sense of compassion as she does – and this conflict runs throughout the film. I like that it’s not resolved either. This makes the film more appealing to a way larger audience, which is the intention. No point preaching to the choir, right?

I love the fact that Temple Grandin is in the movie throughout. She’s been a huge advocate of designing compassionate slaughterhouses – an oxymoron I KNOW, but one that she explains in great detail. If the animals are going to be killed, at least don’t put them into abject terror on their way. I think that was the most upsetting part of the film: seeing how terrified the animals were as they were separated from their herd and shoved into crowded trucks headed for the slaughterhouse. Incidentally, the director doesn’t show any animals actually being slaughtered in the movie – a wise decision because we stay watching, rather than turn away. This is not a horror movie!

The panel was very interesting. Here’s something that I didn’t know about John Mackey: He used to eat meat (and clearly sells it in his markets). But, he is now vegan. In an interview in Men’s Journal, he explains: “I became a vegan in 2003, after a woman interrupted the Whole Foods annual meeting to tell us how bad ducks were treated. We had a big argument, but then we started an email correspondence and she challenged me to learn more. That summer I probably read a dozen books on animal welfare. What shocked me the most was the phenomenon of factory farming — animals endure terrible lives of abuse and suffering — and it’s hidden away. After reading the books, I knew too much to keep eating meat. Remember The Matrix? Take the blue pill or the red pill? I didn’t want to go back to sleep.”

But he also acknowledges that only 1% of the population are vegan, so to run a viable business on the scale of Whole Foods Market, he had to continue selling meat. To this end, he has spearheaded the 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards label. He explained to us that not only does this allow customers to really understand how the animals they are buying were treated, but it also encourages animal producers to get kinder and cleaner. They can all charge top dollar for a Step 5+, so they are starting to make big changes.

This brings me to my final thought in this discourse. If you want to be a kinder flexitarian, and eat/buy meat that is good quality, and from an animal who hasn’t suffered for its entire life, you will have to pay more. Organic, humanely-reared meat is very expensive. I see this as a positive because Americans eat way too much cheap meat. This kind of mass meat consumption is linked to all the number one killer diseases, and inflicts untold suffering on the animals involved – a big LOSS for all involved. I think it’s time to open our eyes. At The Fork certainly helps pull back the curtain on the unpalatable truth. I highly recommend you try to see it. If it’s not playing near you, they will help you organize a showing for your community, school, church or neighborhood.

And, finally, why not join the their 21-day challenge. All you need do is sign up with your email, and they will send you a daily plant-based/higher welfare recipe from all kinds of celebrity chefs, as well as shopping guides, articles, and more. You can also like the At The Fork Facebook page.

I also encourage you to try some of the plethora of plant-based recipes on my blog.

Tim Tebow Dismisses Rumors He’s Speaking At GOP Convention

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow won’t be speaking at next week’s Republican National Convention despite rumors that he’d be present.

An earlier report from the New York Times said he’d be among the dozens of speakers at the Cleveland convention.

“It’s amazing how fast rumors fly, and that’s exactly what it: a rumor,” Tebow said in a Facebook post.

Tebow, perhaps best known for kneeling a lot, has been an outspoken opponent of abortion. The 2010 Super Bowl featured an ad from the anti-abortion group Focus On The Family in which Tebow’s mother recalled how she considered getting an abortion when she was pregnant. She decided not to and later gave birth to Tim Tebow.

The GOP will finalize its official 2016 platform at the convention, where Donald Trump is expected to secure the Republican presidential nomination. But it’s expected to shift farther to the right on social issues such as same-sex marriage and transgender rights.

Those making an address include House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, rumored vice presidential picks Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and billionaire tech mogul Peter Thiel.

Even the Lone Ranger Had Tonto

The current presidential race got me thinking about what truly makes a strong, powerful and trusted leader in the world. For the purposes of this blog, let’s leave opinionating about the candidates’ abilities at the moment up to CNN, FOX NEWS, and Saturday Night Live. Instead, let’s focus on your leadership abilities. On how you become a leader in your own life, at work, at home, in the classroom, and in your community.

Why? Because great leaders inspire change.

I decided to do a little research and find out what people think great leadership consists of. I discovered that not everyone has the same list; and, in fact, I’ve been getting a little flack for how “intense” and demanding my definition is. However, everything special or extraordinary I ever produced in my life came on the heels of a dare or overcoming some sort of fear, so what the heck, I dare you to define leadership as boldly as I do, and then go for it.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT LEADER?

  1. You have a defined purpose. Your vision is locked into your gut. You know who you are and what you want to say.
  2. You walk your talk.
  3. You talk and talk. You want to be heard and followed.
  4. Your mission is for a higher purpose.
  5. You set an example. In other words, you put yourself through something to turn your ordinary into extraordinary, publicly.
  6. You are transparent. You don’t hide things. People are allowed to know you, warts and all.
  7. You master your own mind and keep excuses at bay.

So, are you living your true mission? Do you know people like this? Sure, it’s a stringent, impressive and not easily achievable list. Except, if you’ve got any interest like me in its pursuit, I’ve put together a few pointers below for you to ponder as you step up and into being a powerful, purposeful leader in your life.

BUTCHER YOUR CHICKEN

Being a leader means people will look at you, watch you more closely and yes, judge you. There is no way around it. Many of us are fearful of being judged and thus manage what we say. You cannot be a chicken and a great leader at the same time. If you are afraid of being judged or worried about what people think about you, you will never be proud and confident in your life.

Do note, if you are judging your bosses, spiritual leaders or yoga teachers, it probably means you want their job and think you could do it better, but are too chicken to admit it. Because we know how strongly we judge, we fear being judged by others. Know you are going to be judged and busy yourself with setting standards that YOU want to meet and then meeting them.

OWN YOUR CRAP

Now, we all make mistakes and have negative qualities. It’s hard for anyone to admit when he or she is wrong, but it’s especially hard when you are the leader and you have to admit it up and down the pecking order, or in front of everyone. At our company, we make telling on ourselves a common practice, but it’s still hot-in-the-face-worthy work. And, we recognize how unique this culture is to be so inviting and forgiving. In most communities, admitting you’ve been a jerk is a big risk and pride prevents you from doing it, even if it would be the quickest way to resolve conflict, upgrade a system and/or improve your ability to lead.

A while back, I told a coworker that I thought I could do something better than she could. It turned out I was wrong. Now, as long as I didn’t own that “truth” or tell anyone, I still believed I could do it better. I’m sure you can imagine how much I did not want to admit out loud that disgusting judgment. But I did!

Whenever I own my crap or cop to something, as soon as I say it out loud, its validity is now in question and communication, leadership and affinity can be restored. Once it’s vocalized, it’s as if something about the words meeting with the air changes it (like iron oxidizing into rust) and it becomes absurd. We can all get back to work and I can go back to leading, not from on a high horse and being above others, but from a place grounded in my own integrity. I know I’m not perfect, and as a leader, I made the promise to always look for my weaknesses and mistakes and own them.

Telling the truth and owning what doesn’t work about you, keeps you trustworthy and safe to those around you.

EVEN THE LONE RANGER HAD TONTO

Great leaders are not controlling or ‘Lone Rangers.” They know when to ask for help and delegate. They are team players who let others rise up around them. I can be a baby at this level of leadership. I like trying to do everything myself, but it never works out for me. I end up getting overwhelmed, start dropping balls and people stop trusting me. I now have promises about delegating tasks to employees and communicating when I need help. This brings the team closer together and has people trust me more.

Love
Laurie

When Dodging Questions Makes You Seem More Trustworthy

We are a nation that claims to love frankness — we collectively want you to give it to us straight, no sugar coating, no polish, a desire reflected in both our political theater and our pop culture. You can see it in Donald Trump’s obsession with “political incorrectness,” with Hillary Clinton’s struggle to appear trustworthy; you can see it in the latest wave of disdain for the Taylor Swift PR machine, and in Jennifer Lawrence’s constant fart jokes.

But we also contain multitudes, which means that when the occasion demands, we can forgive — and even celebrate — an artful dodge, at times even mistaking it for something like honesty. And as a new case study in the International Journal of Sport Communication illustrates, we’re often pretty bad at distinguishing between artful hedging and the candidness we claim to crave.

Related: Can Ambiguity Explain Why Some People Seem Really Creepy?

The paper focuses on a press conference that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady held in January 2015 to address questions around “Deflategate,” the accusation that the Patriots had tampered with balls used in their AFC championship game that season. Last winter — after the Patriots had gone on to win the Super Bowl but before the NFL released its Deflategate report — the study subjects, a group of 105 college students, watched one of two versions of the press conference. Some of them saw a compilation of unedited snippets of the conference, in which Brady often started his answers with “I don’t know” before adding some additional explanation; the others watched a recording in which the “I don’t know”s were removed, so he appeared to launch right into straightforward answers.

Somewhat counterintuitively, when the participants filled out surveys after the videos, those who had seen the version without the “I don’t know”s thought Brady dodged more questions than those who saw him hedge. They also tended to think of him more favorably, even after study author David Clementson controlled for preexisting attitudes toward Brady, the Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks (who lost that Super Bowl), and the NFL in general.

On one level, says Clementson, a communications professor at the Ohio State University, it’s not actually that weird of a finding; it’s just an extension of the basic decency we typically extend to people in our day-to-day conversations — with a friend, a co-worker, a tourist on the street who stops you for directions. “Why should we think there’s necessarily anything wrong with [saying you don’t know something]? If I ask, ‘Is it supposed to rain today?’ and you say, ‘I don’t know, I have no idea,’ I’m not going to say, ‘How dare you? Why are you dodging my question?'” he says. “We give people the benefit of the doubt. They don’t have to answer all of our questions as directly as possible.”

Related: 10 Words for Emotions You Didn’t Even Know You Had

On the other hand, though, Tom Brady isn’t a friend or a co-worker or a lost stranger — he’s a public figure, and people who haven’t interacted with him personally will nevertheless have opinions about his character. And in that regard, the paper is an interesting spin on a strange quirk of human psychology — that regardless of how much we say we love straight talk, we really love a good hem and haw. It’s called equivocation theory, the idea that vague nonanswers can be more persuasive or more palatable than straightforward replies.

Equivocation theory — also sometimes referred to as “strategic ambiguity” — is built in part on the work of psychologist Philip Zimbardo, who would later become famous for conducting the Stanford Prison Experiment. As a graduate student at Yale in the late 1950s, Zimbardo concluded from his research on ambiguity that people tend to prefer vague messages because they can more easily reconcile them with their existing beliefs, interpreting them whichever way is most convenient. Clementson’s case study, he argues, carries that idea to its logical conclusion: “You don’t get much more ambiguous and non-straightforward than ‘I don’t know,'” he says.

But taken this far, he adds, the concept doesn’t apply to everyone. Clementson usually focuses his research on politicians, who, he says, typically don’t get the same sort of leeway to admit they don’t know something (remember all the flak Hillary caught for saying she didn’t know how to wipe an email server?). A candidate can typically get away with vague speechifying — one experiment using snippets of the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate, in fact, found that people preferred the less-clear-cut answers over the concrete policy descriptions — but won’t be as easily forgiven for claiming a lack of knowledge.

Related: The Importance of Losing Yourself to Awe Once in a While

“Sports figures, movie stars, entertainers — our tax dollars aren’t paying them, we aren’t electing them to represent us in certain matters,” he says, and so our expectations are lower than they are for politicians, college professors, or similar roles where authority comes from amassing and disseminating knowledge.

“The thinking is, if they don’t know the answer to that question, no one knows the answer to that question. They’re in a position of authority where they have to know the answer,” he says. “If the White House press secretary says ‘I don’t know,’ it’s like, if you don’t know, why are you here?” Besides, athletes and entertainers build their credibility by being good at what they do; candidates and elected officials, on the other hand, build their credibility on knowing things — which means it’s better to bluster through a tough question than it is to ‘fess up.

Michelle Bachmann Says Jews Will Be Free To Say ‘Merry Christmas’ When Donald Trump Is President

Former Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R) returned to the spotlight this week with an unusual definition of “religious liberty.” Apparently, it’s a land where people of all faiths can come together and say “Merry Christmas.”

Over the weekend, Bachmann told right-wing radio host Jan Markell that Donald Trump “gets and understands religious liberty.” To show how much Trump “gets and understands” it, Bachmann shared an anecdote she said came from a meeting with the reality-TV-star-turned-GOP-presidential-candidate.

“He even said, ‘I don’t understand, when I was growing up, everybody said Merry Christmas. Even my Jews would say Merry Christmas,’” she explained. “’New York City, there are a lot of Jews, and they would even say Merry Christmas. Why can’t we even say Merry Christmas anymore?’”

The comments were posted online by Right Wing Watch.

Bachmann also said Trump had “1950s sensibilities” and “1950s common sense,” and warned that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would bring “certain destruction” and “catastrophic decline” and a “godless United States that will walk into certain catastrophe.”

Dear Jennifer (And All Women)

This week, I was having dinner with two friends who happen to be two of the most successful and beautiful women I know.

As it usually does with female friends, conversation quickly turned to clothes and from clothes to bodies and from bodies to general self-loathing.

We each participated.

I hate my tummy, always have. I’m not a fan of my teeth either and am willing one day to fork over a lot of money to change them. They each hated their arms, my housemate hates her nose, my mom hates her neck, and I’ve never met someone who had something positive to say about their thighs.

I’m not overstating these two friends. They’re each stunning in their own right, and intimidatingly successful. One has a job that hundreds would covet and has risen through the ranks of her career at an unprecedented speed. The other is fronting a massive national campaign that has received global attention.

And we sat there, talking about arms.

On Thursday, Jennifer Aniston articulated the subconscious agreement all women enter into. The “agreement” is an unwritten standard of expectations for all women. Women must be skinny, quiet, dainty, successful but not overly successful, they must get married, have children and then bounce back to being skinny.

We enforce these expectations on each other. We wonder why our single friends are single, we wonder when our loved up friends will get married and we ask when our married friends will have children.

We enforce these expectations on ourselves. We strive for thigh gaps, longer legs, flatter tummies and of course, toned arms.

Throughout my career, I’ve met and interviewed dozens of incredible women. Beautiful women, women I admire and women who’s success I try to emanate. I remember snippets of most of these interviews but the most poignant moment I had was when speaking to a survivor of an eating disorder. She was talking about her girlfriend and spoke passionately about what she admired most in her, gushing over her kindness, her intelligence and her wit. She was a confident speaker, but when I asked her why she admired those traits in a partner but hated herself purely on physical attributes, she was speechless.

In fairness, it’s a question I can’t answer either.

Beauty is a double-edged sword — what we admire in others is rarely what we strive for in ourselves.

Aniston called for an end to this subconscious agreement, she pleas for a conscious attempt to re-evaluate beauty and to change the currency through which we value a woman’s worth.

She want’s to change the record and so do we.

Of course, it’s easy to buy into the agreement. We’ve got a lot of work to do to change things. We’re surrounded by unrealistic standards of beauty, we’ve evolved to be voyeuristic and we’re guilty of speculating.

But Jesus we’ve got to be sounder to each other and ourselves. We need to be a sisterhood.

I need to tell my friends that they have fucking great arms. That I’m amazed at each of them and that it astounds me what they’re capable of.

I need to say sorry to Jennifer Aniston for caring that she might be pregnant and say that generally she’s just a total badass and I fucking loved Cake.

I want a flatter tummy, but I also want to be a better woman, a better friend and a smarter journalist. I want to write for the women I admire, write about the women I admire, and radiate support.

In The Battle Against Mental Health, One Doctor Conquers Her Demons

2016-07-14-1468458165-1321262-MentalIllnessPhotobyAlachuaCounty.jpg
“Mental Illness.” Photo by Alachua County.

Dr. Z met me at a coffee shop on a rainy day in San Francisco. We sat across from each other, sipping hot coffee as funky 70s music boomed from the speakers. It felt horribly out of place considering what our meeting was about: her suicide attempt.

She was apprehensive and I understood why. Unfortunately, there still exists significant stigmas related to mental illness, and judgment seems only harsher for those who are considered successful. We live in a time where even presidential candidates, those entrusted to represent our nation, mock those with mental illnesses and are cavalier with offensive and hurtful terminology.

Her dark hair was worn up in a messy bun, and she wore baggy sweatpants–a nice break from the pencil skirt and white lab coat she sports on a daily basis during her busy outpatient practice. She is a beautiful, high-functioning woman who is loved by her patients and extremely accomplished in her medical career. But there are parts of her identity that you cannot find on her resume or LinkedIn profile. She is a survivor of depression and bipolar disorder, and she battles mental illness every day.

When asked about her past struggles, she describes dark times, like when she temporarily dropped out of medical school because she was coping with the death of a loved one, while simultaneously running from an abusive relationship. This ultimately lead to a dangerous depressive episode and she was hospitalized in an inpatient psychiatric ward for two weeks.

“All I remember is being scared,” she recalls.

She explains during the hospitalization, fear gripped her amidst the heavily regimented and structured therapy sessions. She was put in restraints; given medications; and she felt like a fish trapped in a glass bowl.

Despite these hard times, Dr. Z says it was the therapy provided in this harsh experience that provided her with the ladder she needed to climb out of the hole. Lots of work laid ahead of her when she left the psychiatric ward, but she was motivated to find peace and the support needed to achieve her goals. She ultimately returned to her home, enrolled back into medical school, and cut out the toxic people in her life. The rest is history.

When asked how this experience changed her, she told me a person gains proper perspective in the face of trauma and tragedy. She now uses this force to propel herself and others around her forward. People who meet her would have no idea she battles mental illness. Rather than run from her difficult situation, she has embraced it, harnessed it, and is now empowered by it.

Mental health is finally getting much-needed attention from influential organizations, the media, celebrities, and even world leaders. Advocates have made great strides in their attempts to erase the stigma of such diseases and in raising awareness of mental health challenges. But there is still much work left to be done. Approximately one in five American adults experience mental illness in a given year. More worrisome, is that suicide rates have increased over the last decade, and in 2014 there were 42,773 documented suicide deaths. It is the second-leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 34.

This article is not about praising one individual. The purpose is to recognize that cultural misconceptions about mental health can become oppressive, and create a sense of shame and denial for those who suffer from these diseases. This makes it significantly harder for people in need of treatment to seek help. Dr. Z is living proof that even the most accomplished of individuals can suffer from a mental illness–and overcome it.

I know some people will think Dr. Z is unqualified to care for sick patients, but nothing could be further from the truth. Because of her struggles, she is able to deliver better care for those who need healing. She has a sensitivity and personal awareness that is needed desperately in modern medicine but cannot be taught in text books. Because of her mental health history, not in spite of it, she has been able to save countless lives, in more ways than one.

The same is true for so many other mental health survivors. Emotional turmoil can transform a person into a tool for radical change and transformation, one through which others are able to become stronger and healthier. It is our duty to create a culture of sensitivity and acceptance, perhaps now more than ever, so that we might see all those affected by mental illness reach their full potential.

Donald Trump To Skip NAACP Convention

Donald Trump has turned down an offer to speak at the NAACP’s national convention next week, the organization said on Tuesday night.

That makes him just the fourth presidential candidate since 1980 to skip the event, according to NBC News.

“The explanation given was that they’re holding their convention at the same time. We of course, are in Cincinnati, they are in Cleveland,” NAACP president and CEO Cornell William Brooks said on CNN. “We were hoping that he would make the short trip from Cleveland to Cincinnati.”

The two cities are roughly 40 minutes apart by plane.

Trump himself has not yet publicly commented on the snub, but the NAACP released a statement on Facebook saying the Republican candidate missed a chance “to connect on issues that have dominated the national conversation in recent years.”

The organization wrote:

You can’t run for president and not talk about police misconduct and police brutality. You can’t run for president and not talk about this country’s civil rights agenda. This is an important moment, and our convention is an opportunity for anyone running for president to provide a window into not only their policies, but into their heart and character as a candidate.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will speak at the event on Monday.

“We look forward to hearing Secretary Clinton’s priorities and plan to advance our issues of social justice,” the organization said on Twitter.

Trump has been repeatedly accused of racism, particularly after he retweeted messages from white supremacists. Trump even shared a wildly inaccurate graphic that claimed 81 percent of all murders of white people were committed by blacks. In reality, FBI statistics showed that 82 percent of murders involving white victims were committed by whites.

Earlier this year, he condoned the beating of a Black Lives Matter protester at one of his events, and this week he called the group “divisive” and “racist.” As a result, he has picked up almost no support from the African-American community, receiving just 1 percent of the black vote in a recent poll.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Here’s How You Can Meditate Anytime, Anywhere

There are many misconceptions about meditation that Tibetan Buddhist master Mingyur Rinpoche wants to set straight. The biggest one? You don’t have to quiet your mind for an extended period of time in order to reap the benefits.

You have the ability to engage in the practice anytime, anywhere. The key is focusing on what’s happening inside your head. Instead of trying to block your thoughts and emotions as you’re meditating, Rinpoche said that you should lean into what he calls your “monkey mind,” or the constant chattering in your head.

The best way to do this is through the simple habit of being aware of your breath as you breathe in and out, he explained. Even though thoughts might creep into your mind, you are still able to meditate.

“As long as you don’t forget your breath, anything is okay,” Rinpoche said. “[You don’t] need too much concentration. Just simply be aware of your breath.”

Take a look at the video above for more on the power of meditation.

No exceptions to equal protection

Co-authored by Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney

One month after a deadly attack against the LGBT community in Orlando, Republican Leadership in the House of Representatives will mark this week’s anniversary in an ugly way: by considering a piece of legislation that would bar the federal government from taking action when individuals or businesses attempt to deny, discriminate against or otherwise dehumanize LGBT Americans.

Beneath the partisan politicking that will undoubtedly capture headlines as the so-called First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) is given a hearing this week, there is an eerily familiar argument: the religious beliefs of some can trump the basic civil rights of others. From race and gender to sexual orientation and gender identity, it is a dangerous road our country has traveled down before. Still, today we see efforts at every level of government to distort our country’s sacred promise of religious freedom and use it to codify laws that protect some Americans but not others.

As practicing Catholics in public service, we have watched these efforts with heavy hearts. As the first openly gay congressman from New York, one of us has felt them as a direct threat to his own family.

We believe religious liberty and equal protection are not mutually exclusive. In a nation built as a beacon for those facing religious persecution and state-sponsored discrimination, the American commitment to religious liberty was crafted, above all else, as a statement of tolerance. It is a promise to protect and accept the marginalized and the minority, the voiceless and the victimized

In order to keep that promise for every American, however, the First Amendment established a simple boundary: your rights extend so far as they don’t infringe on mine or cause me serious harm. My freedom of faith cannot be used to undermine yours.

A commitment to this basic balance has fueled a growing federal response to those attempting to justify – and codify – discrimination towards the LGBT community. Last year, the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges recognized same-sex marriage under federal law. The Equality Act would add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes under the Civil Rights Act. The Obama Administration’s new guidelines for public schools and health providers regarding transgender persons make it clear that there can be no exceptions to equal protection. Last month, the House of Representatives saw bipartisan support for the Maloney amendment, which would bar federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT Americans.

Still, a powerful obstacle remains. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act became federal law in 1993 with broad, bipartisan support. Crafted to protect religious minorities, it was a clear statement by the American people and their elected representatives that protection and recourse is needed when the law unintentionally infringes upon free exercise. Jewish children should be allowed to wear yarmulkes in public schools that otherwise prohibit headwear. Fire department restrictions on facial hair should contain exceptions for those of Muslim faith.

Over the past 23 years, however, RFRA has been contorted into a tool for employers to undermine basic workplace protections, organizations to stonewall child labor investigations, and health providers to deny needed care for victims of sexual abuse.

The Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores opened these floodgates even further, providing a path for corporations to cite faith in discriminating against employees.

Worse yet, where the Supreme Court led state and federal governments have followed. In Congress, over 170 Republican members have leant their name to FADA. In our states, more than 25 so-called “religious liberty” bills were introduced in 2015. These bills lay the groundwork for a pregnant worker to be fired because her employer doesn’t believe in premarital sex or for a transgender child to be refused health care because a provider doesn’t accept the child’s gender identity.

It is with these circumstances in mind that the Do No Harm Act was filed earlier this year in the House of Representatives, with Congressman Bobby Scott. This bill would preserve the original purpose of RFRA – to serve as a protective shield for religious minorities – and clarify that no one can claim religious exemption from laws that protect against discrimination, govern wages and collective bargaining, prohibit child labor and abuse, provide access to health care, regulate public accommodations, or provide social services through government contracts.

As men of faith, the ability to freely and fully exercise sincerely-held religious beliefs in this country is a liberty we cherish. Across the nation, religious principle inspires countless families, organizations and communities to champion economic justice, human dignity and common decency.

But there is a difference between exercising religious beliefs and imposing them on others. Our Constitution fiercely protects the former and expressly prohibits the latter.

The Do No Harm Act reestablishes that fundamental distinction and confirms what generations of civic history, constitutional law and American experience have proved true: if civil and legal rights exist only in the absence of a neighbor’s religious objection, then they are not rights but empty promises.

The Stories We Tell

When my mom was a teenager, she decided she wanted to play in the high school orchestra. She went to the music director and asked if she could join. He said, “What do you play?”

She, bright and chipper, replied, “What do you need?”

He paused, looked at her, and told her they needed a bass player.

“Amazing!” she said. “That’s exactly what I play!”

The man showed her the school’s string bass and said she could take it home to practice. He also told her the names of the strings, pointing to each one as he did. I’m thinking he probably did not entirely buy her story.

In practice, she watched the other bass player (a real one), and figured out where to put her fingers, more or less. As the school year wore on, though, it got harder and harder to get anything out of that bass. Soon she was sawing like mad and making no sound at all. Finally her stand partner took pity on her and explained that you have to apply rosin to the bow hair every time you play, so pulling the bow back and forth will create friction on the strings. No rosin, no friction; no friction, no sound.

After that semester she left the bass behind and returned to the piano, on which she was actually pretty decent (and which required no rosin). But she could always say this: for a season, she played string bass.

At about the same time my mother’s bass career was flourishing, my father, a recent immigrant from war-torn Europe, was drafted into the U.S. Army. (This was long before the two met; he was quite a few years older than she.) Not too keen on joining the infantry and being sent to the front lines, he managed to wangle a position in the Army band. There was, he learned, an opening for a piccolo player.

Amazing! as he explained to the presiding officer at his initial conscription meeting. Piccolo was exactly what he played!

“Oh, that reminds me,” said the officer as my father was about to leave. “We just got in a shipment of instruments. Would you like to check out the piccolos?”

My father was in a bit of a tight spot. He could play a very credible violin, and viola, and (unlike his future wife) string bass. He had never in his life played a piccolo. He’d probably never even touched one.

He did, however, play a mean recorder. (He gave lessons to the Von Trapp family, who he reports were not quite as delightful in person as Julie Andrews and her film brood.) Recorder, piccolo … how different could it be? In fact, the two are as different as driving a stick shift is from riding a skateboard. But he wasn’t in much of a position to quibble.

They walked out back to the newly arrived shipment. The officer opened a crate, pulled out a brand new piccolo, and handed it to my father.

My father took the thing, looked it over, sighted down the bore, tapped a few keys — kicking the tires, so to speak. Finally, seeing no way to delay further, he put it to his lips, doing his best to imitate every flute player he had ever seen … and managed to get some sort of breathy note out of thing.

Messing with the keys as he blew, he found one note he could trill on, and he did so for a good few seconds with casual expertise.

He then took the terrifying little beast down from his lips, nearly passing out from the expended breath, and gave it the El Exigente thumbs up. And then dashed off to beg a few emergency lessons from a friend, who was principal flutist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, in the two weeks before he had to report for duty.

Alas, his piccolo career didn’t last. Once command realized he spoke German like a native (because he was one), they yanked him from the band, transferred him to Intelligence, and stuck him out in the field as an interpreter. Not only on the front lines, but often ahead of the front lines.

Still, for a season, he did play the piccolo. And quite enjoyed it, too, because its notes cut so sharply through the instrumental texture that he found he could control the tempo of the entire band. If the conductor in him didn’t care for the way the band leader was conducting this particular piece, he could hijack it and mold it more to his taste.

My point in these two stories is not that they happened, but that my parents told them to me, often enough and with so much evident delight that they became an embedded part of how I came to see the world.

In my world — the world according to the stories I heard growing up — you can become whatever you want to become and do whatever you set out to do. From bass to piccolo, the world is your oyster.

When I was thirteen, my mother was taking a group of her middle school students to Greece to perform Aeschylus‘ Prometheus Bound, and she needed someone to set the choruses to music. She asked me to do it. Me?! I didn’t see how that was possible. I’d never composed music before. I was only thirteen.

At the same time, though, there was also a little voice inside whispering, “Amazing — composing is exactly what I do!”

So I did, and went on to an early career in composition.

When I was seventeen I was part of a group of friends who started our own high school. When people hear that story they sometimes say, “You were teenagers! Start your own school? How could you possibly do that!”

Because in the world we lived in, that was not only possible, it was inevitable. Of course, we didn’t know how to go about doing it, any more than my teenage mother knew how to play string bass. But we thought, Start a high school? Amazing — that’s exactly what we do.

So we did.

Now that we’re grownups, it’s up to us all to choose which stories we tell our children — and tell ourselves.

We could tell stories about how unfair the world is. About how mean people can be. How you should be reasonable in your expectations. Or how money doesn’t grow on trees. To me, those stories are no fun, not interesting, and uninspiring.

They are not the fabric of the world I want to live in.

One of my favorite stories is the one about the American president who got up in front of Congress and said we would put a man on the moon, and get him back safely, and do all that within the next ten years.

When JFK made that ridiculous claim, we no more knew how to get a man onto the moon than my friends and I knew how to start a high school, or than I knew how to compose music, or than my teenage mother knew how to play string bass. But what did we all collectively say?

“Put a man on the moon? Amazing — why, that’s exactly what we do!”

You’ve probably heard the expression, “Shoot for the moon, and you’ll probably clear the treetops.”

Balderdash.I say, shoot for the moon — and hit the moon.

And if you don’t know how to start? Find a note you can play, and trill on it.

The artists behind this month’s top workout tunes could easily pass for the lineup of a great, summer music festival. Kicking off the day, you’d find upstarts like Shawn Mendes and crossover favorites like Tegan & Sara. Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood could headline the country stage. Meanwhile, club acts like Sigala and The Chainsmokers supply beats in the dance tent.

Other noteworthy tracks this month include a Coldplay remix from Seeb (who turned Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” into an unlikely hit). Adele makes an appearance with any unusually jaunty cut from her most recent album. Finally, Elle King turns up with a track from the Ghostbusters reboot. If any of these options strikes your fancy, here’s the full top 10 list–according to the votes logged on workout music site Run Hundred.

  • Keith Urban & Carrie Underwood – “The Fighter” – 132 BPM
  • Shawn Mendes – “Treat You Better” – 83 BPM
  • Tegan & Sara – “Stop Desire” – 159 BPM
  • Adele – “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” – 82 BPM
  • Pitbull & Enrique Iglesias – “Messin’ Around” – 80 BPM
  • Sigala, John Newman & Nile Rodgers – “Give Me Your Love (Cedric Gervais Remix)” – 126 BPM
  • Coldplay – “Hymn for the Weekend (Seeb Remix)” – 102 BPM
  • Elle King – “Good Girls” – 88 BPM
  • The Chainsmokers & Daya – “Don’t Let Me Down (Hardwell & Sephyx Remix)” – 151 BPM
